The Gargoyle is Isaac Christians, a modern-day hero who originally struck a deal with a demon to help his town of Christiansboro, Virginia, but then repented and was stuck in the body of a gargoyle. While Christians was never a "super hero" in the years before the events of Fantastic Four #1, we do know that he was born in 1901 and that he is a veteran of both World Wars One and Two. After World War One he traveled to Asia and studied under a mystic named "Vishnu Dass." It is unknown what other actions he might have done on the side of good in the years before the events of FF #1.
