Nathaniel Mare was a private eye in New York City in 1952 who was, from all accounts, rather successful in fighting crime. He had a number of operatives who helped him fight against crime, including "Sid the Snitch" and the Haitian-born cab driver Ellery Snow. Mare was involved with Eileen Tolan, the daughter of the police commissioner.
