Science

(updated 6 April 2002)

Look, I'm a liberal arts guy, I don't know from science. So I don't know, you understand, whether these sites are really as good as they seem. But they certainly seem to be, and as a writer I sometimes have need of scientific information. So when I do, and find a site worth saving, I do.

* Anthropic Coincidences A good site listing the coincidences that enable live to evolve, and the explations therefore from various notable scientists and writers.
Archaeology and Ancient Sites A nice, lengthy index of sites on archaeology sites.
The Big Picture Book of Viruses I love stuff like this. Information, with images, on all sorts of viruses.
Birds of Prey From the good folks at Sea World. Everything you might want to know about raptors.
Black Holes and Mysteries of the Cosmos A good online guide to black holes and various cutting-edge space theories and information.
CDC Parasitology Diagnosis Web Site Information galore on parasites, including how to diagnose them. Cool!
Classics of Out(land)ish Anthropology A "critical approach to bad anthropology on the web." Some amusing stuff here.
Diseases and condition Directory and Search Engine Aw, c'mon, haven't you wanted a good web resource for information on diseases? If you have, look no farther.
Diseases Specifically, diseases that are transmittable from animals to humans. Neat, eh?
History of Metals A medium/long essay on the history of metals and metallurgy, focusing on gold, copper, lead, silver, tin, mercury, and iron.
Insect Pathogens Database A page on insect-borne diseases--how can you not love something like that?
JNDRD: Natural Disaster Reference Database of Japan A database of disasters in Japan. (Why are you looking at me like that?)
* Life Through Geologic Time A whizzo pictorial site, with good information to boot, on the history of Earth.
Natural Disaster Reference Database A database of international disasters. Aw, c'mon, it's neat! (Oh, bite me, it's fun)
New Vents Home Page The Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory's vents program, which "conducts research on the impacts and consequences of submarine volcanoes and hydrothermal venting on the global ocean." A neat little site.
The Nine Planets "An overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each of the planets and moons in our solar system."
Ocean Planet: In Search of Giant Squid I think anyone who has read or seen anything involving Captain Nemo has always had some interest in the Giant Squid--and, undoubtedly, as the source for the myth of the kraken, the giant squid has been interesting to many others across the centuries. This online exhibit does a good job of dispelling the rumors and myths and replacing them with facts. Of course, it's also got photos and links and all that, too. The only drawback is the blue-font-on-black-background combination, which is a mistake.
Periodic Table of the Elements Explaining various elements to middle school students (which is where my scientific knowledge ranks).
A Pictorial Presentation of Parasites This seems to be down at the moment, but I remember it as being a very fine look at parasites.
NEW Planet Quest NASA's site on the search for planets in distant solar systems.
Poisonous Plants, Animals and Arthropods A good links site of information on various poisonous flora and fauna.
Rec.arts.sf.science qdFAQ An informative FAQ (frequently asked questions list) on various science fictional science issues, including dinosaur civilisations, the Fermi paradox, orbital elevators, and so on.
* Scirus An excellent search engine for science sites.
The Scorpion Emporium A thorough guide to scorpions.
NEW The Social Insects WWW Antbase A very informative resource for information on ants.
The Search for Extrasolar Planets Another good site on planets and the search for them outside our solar system.
Star Journey @ nationalgeographic.com Another nifty National Geographic site, this one addressing the stars.
* A Universe of Galaxies A nice, long and detailed look at the small and large galaxies in our universe.
Volcano World A good source for information on volcanoes.
Welcome to the Planets A collection of images from NASA's planetary exploration program.
Welcome to the Raptor Center The home page of the Raptor Center of the University of Minnesota. Information and pictures on that fascinating class of bird.

What's New on NetVet & the Electronic Zoo Several years' worth of animal and veterinary information. (Not active, it should be said, since 1999.)
