Ollie wrote this poem about The Belaiters International Tour to KL. That's Kuala Leura, on the border of Brunei, not Kuala Lumpur. It was a fun way to end the year and have a bit of a rehearsal for our final Folk Night in KB (Kuala Belait).
On the Occasion of the Belaiters Foreign Gig in KL (20/11/02) by Oliver Lalor
We left KB
At half past three.
We were KL bound
With the Belaiters sound.
In Ulu Lumut we had a forced stop
When Ray's radiator blew its top.
In less than an hour
We were crossing the border,
Guitars in hand,
The Belaiters band
Our gig was in Jawi's, a used-to-be expat place,
Which seems to have fallen from its former grace.
It took time to get used to the dim light
But we soon found our audience was ladies of the night.
Our music went down like a lead balloon
For the punters hadn't come for The Rising of the Moon,
Finnegan's Wake or The Calton Weaver.
No - I'm afraid their intentions were not so pure;
They'd come seeking solace from a local whore.
There was a tattooed lady and a hermaphrodite
And several others who'd be yours if the price were right.
In a place where virility and stamina are top
I'm afraid the Belaiters band was a total flop.
Don Nixon - one of the few ex-pats who made it to our gig.
And now .... here are the lyrics of The Belaiters' Hit Song - I Love Kuala Belait:
I Love Kuala Belait

   E                                                  A
Driving down the road from Jerudong
   B7                                          E
Don't just stop when you reach Tutong.
    A                           E
With a little bit of luck you might
   B7                                      E
Make it all the way to Kuala Belait.

ALL I'm going back to KB, baby.
   B7                                    E
That's where I want to be,
                       A                                E
Where the teapot sits on the roundabout
                 B7                          E
And the donkey nods at me.

In the middle of the city we've got Jalan Pretty.
That's where all the action is at night.
You can have a lot of fun in Bandar Sri Begawan
But you can't beat Kuala Belait.

I'm going back to KB, baby.
That's where I want to be.
Where the teapot sits on the roundabout
And the donkey nods at me.

Bandar Seri Begawan
Is not the place for everyone.
'Cause I love - that's right -
I love Kuala Belait.

This city is expanding at a furious pace.
New buildings going up all over the place
The High Court will open - one of these days.
(Spoken: Well ... it might.)
I love Kuala Belait.

We've got plenty of rice and the noodles are nice.
This town is a gourmet's delight.
You can't go wrong with roti kosong
At New Akbar in Kuala Belait.

I'm going back to KB, baby.
That's where I want to be.
Where the teapot sits on the roundabout
And the donkey nods at me.

Bandar Seri Begawan
Is not the place for everyone.
'Cause I love - that's right -
I love Kuala Belait.

In KB town you can watch the sun go down
Sitting on the sand at night.
See the oil rigs burning bright, while the sand flies bite.
On the beach at Kuala Belait.

Let me make this clear - I really like Seria
The billionth barrel is a wonderful sight
But nothing can compare with the excitement in the air
In downtown Kuala Belait.

I'm going back to KB, baby.
That's where I want to be.
Where the teapot sits on the roundabout
And the donkey nods at me.

Bandar Seri Begawan
Is not the place for everyone.
'Cause I love - that's right -
I love Kuala Belait.
