The Fly - Ones To Watch - July 2003
"IS THE singer hell bent on fighting you or fascinating you? It's hard to tell."

Johnny Borrell is feasting on the praise that's being launched at him from all quarters. The above quote is from Mr.Colchester United, Steve Lamacq. And we trust him because he goes out a lot and therefore knows a thing or two about promising new acts.  On the first listen of 'Rock 'N' Roll Lies' (recorded at the now legendary Toe Rag Studios) OTW was heading for the phone to find out about this swoonsome guitar four-piece.  It has Strokes, Libertines, Television and Costello all wrapped up in a sheet of beat poetry that kept playing long after I'd turned off the CD player.  The intensity of the live shows is as blistering as the demo's.  Oh yes...

"Isn't that the point?  I believe in giving something back to those that are prepared to listen to us objectively and not just see bass, drums, guitar.  I labour over my writing because it's important, to the band but ultimately to me.  We interpret what I write so it has to be as good as I can make it."

And he makes it well.  Johnny is keen to be regarded as a great songwriter and a good performer. With tracks such as 'To The Sea' and the dynamic 'Rock 'N' Roll Lies', Razorlight are heading the new wave of recently signed British rock acts that will have you enthusing like us come Christmas.

"There are so many ideas and so little time.  I just hope that all our work comes to something, because with Razorlight I feel that there is an opportunity to grasp. How else can I make people listen?"

Just play, Johnny.  We'll all follow.
