Razorlight @ King Cross Pool & Snooker Club - 18th August '03
"It seems like an eternity since Razorlight announced the release of their debut single, ‘Rock N Roll Lies’, but the happy day has finally arrived and to celebrate the band held a launch party, playing what could quite possibly be their best gig yet in the intimate and - thanks to the large amount of invited guests - very hot Kings Cross Snooker & Pool Club.

Arriving on stage resplendent in a snazzy red jacket, Johnny Borrell hands his cigarette to a winsome young thing in the audience and the band proceed to quite literally tear the place apart. Opening their set with a ferocious ‘Bright Lights’, it is clear that their recent stint supporting The Hiss on their UK Tour has resulted in an even more assured performance from the band. Johnny is as captivating as ever, hurling himself around the stage, getting up close and personal with the first two rows of the audience and imbuing every lyric with emotion. The band blast through familiar favourites such as ‘Rip it Up’, ‘To the Sea’ and, of course, ‘Rock N Roll Lies’ with barely a pause for breath. Highlights tonight include a very promising new song, ‘Dalston’ and the always brilliant ‘In the City’ – the coda of which has metamorphosed into an extended jam/stream of consciousness rant the likes of which have not been seen since Suede’s last truly great single, ‘Stay Together’.

Those of us who have been lucky enough to see Razorlight perform regularly in London know how great they are and with the release of their first album set for early next year, ‘Rock N Roll Lies’ getting steady airplay on XFM and their upcoming performance at the Reading Festival, it cannot be long before the rest of the country catches up."
