WPWZ-FM 95.5 History

The station we now know as "Power 95-5", WPWZ signed on November 25th, 1996, as WEQQ, a simulcast of the hot adult contemporary format heard on Curtis Media station WEQR 102.3 in Goldsboro (now WKIX). The two were marketed under the moniker "The Double Q". On January 9th, 1998, the format and call letters of Raleigh country station WKIX 96.1 were moved to Goldsboro-based WKTC 96.9 FM, another country outlet. The displaced WKTC format and call letters were moved to WEQQ's 95.5 FM dial position. An all-Christmas format in December 2003 marked the station's transition from country to an urban format, which debuted December 26th, 2003. By January 1st, 2004, WKTC was known as WPWZ. WPWZ was owned by Curtis Media and then MainQuad Communications until Maryland-based First Media bought them in 2003. "Power 95-5" can be heard best in far eastern sections of the Triangle area.
