Li Ka-shing heads mainlanders' list of top entrepreneurs

Tycoon Li Ka-shing may have made his billions in Hong Kong and around the world but he is No1 with mainland residents, who have voted him China's most impressive entrepreneur.

Li topped a list of China's 10 most impressive Chinese business people in a poll of 4,236 residents in 10 cities across the country, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The other nine achievers are all mainland entrepreneurs.

Second on the list is Zhang Ruimin, of white goods manufacturing giant Haier Group.

At No 3 is Liu Yonghao, of the privately run New Hope Group, who Forbes says is the mainland's richest man.

He is followed by Liu Chuanzhi of Hong Kong-listed Legend Group; Charles Zhang of Nasdaq-listed Sohu.com; Ni Runfeng of television manufacturing giant Sichuan Changhong; Xu Ming of Dalian Shide Group; Wang Zhidong, the former chief executive of Nasdaq-listed Sina.com, Yang Lan of Sun Media Group, and Wu Shihong, general manager of home appliance manufacturing giant TCL Holdings.

The poll was conducted by Zero-point Opinion Poll Agency, which also asked industry insiders to vote for their favourite entrepreneurs.

Topping the list is Wang Shi of Shenzhen property developer China Vanke. He is followed by Liu Yonghao of New Hope Group; Zhang Ruimin of Haier; Li Shufu of Zhejiang-based China Geely Group; Yang Rong, former executive of Hong Kong-listed Brilliance China Automotive Holdings; Pan Shiyi of Hongshi Group; Yin Mingshan of Chongqing-based Lifan Group; Xu Shaochun of Shenzhen-based Kingdee International Software Group; Wang Wenjing of Beijing-based software developer UFsoft; and Liu Wei of Hong Kong-based Pacific City International (Group).   - Liu Qi     The Standard     26 July 2002 / 11:28 PM
