The third movie in Peter Jackson's trilogy appeared in December 2003 and was highly anticipated due to the success of the two earlier movies. At the time of release, it broke the record of highest box-office revenues in the first weekend after appearance. Return of the King is in the top 10 of the world's best selling movies ever (current position view here). Generally, the movie was critically acclaimed.
Return of the King starts off after the battle of Helm's Deep and tells the story of the siege of Minas Tirith, Aragorn walking the Paths of the Dead and Frodo and Sam reaching Mount Doom. Although large parts of the book were omitted (such as scouring of the Shire), Jackson remains loyal to the book as demonstraded by the long end sequence and ending with: "Well, I'm back".
LOTR:ROTK was nominated for 11 academy awards and won them all at the 76th annual Academy Awards (which equals Titanic and Ben Hur) and won 4 golden globes among which the award for best director and best film.
