The TV movie "The Hobbit" by Rankin and Bass was released in 1978. It is an animated movie, primarily designed for children, since the movie contains no violence and all the songs and characters are lighter and happier then how they are described in the books. The movie was broadcasted by several stations in the late 1970's. Again, the movie is too short to depict all events in the book. The Arkenstone has been removed from the plot and many other things are left untouched. Rankin and Bass's interpretation of hobbits and elves is quite childish. Still, this movie is considered by some to be the best movie of the three animated Tolkien movies.
