Butlins Sensation! |
Redbridge players shine The band are indeed fortunate to have many experienced regular players within their ranks and also conductors too! Solo Trombonist Jayne Murrill conducting East London Brass won the 2nd Section contest, and 1st Horn player Simon Jones led Fulham Brass to a third place placing in the Third Section. |
Its January 2009 and Redbridge Brass have gone to the seaside for the weekend in bracing Skegness! On their return instead of a stick of rock they brought back a nice shiny trophy. It turned out to be a very special pleasure trip indeed, and one not experienced by this band since it won the National Youth Section in its earliest days. The Butlins Mineworkers Festival from the Skyline Resort, Skegness, is now a major contest in the brass band calendar with substantial prize money and kudos on offer to the winners. Redbridge Brass contested and won this double event competition in style and against some serious opposition too, in a weekend bonanza of brass banding. The Mineworkers Championships started back in the 1950s, when the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO) was formed and whose name remains on the trophy's base. The competition has been revived and is now sponsored by Butlins and continues to grow in size and status. |
Back of the net! The band played Harrison's Dream (Peter Graham) in the test piece contest and then impressed the judges with the following entertainment programme: - All Night Long - Richie arr. Leigh Baker - Jesus Wipes Away My Tears - arr. Broughton - Soloist Jaynes Murrill - Huapango - Moncayo arr. Phil Littlemore - Mr Sandman - Pat Ballard arr Leigh Baker - Soloists Dave Wallace, Ralph Brill, T-Jay McKenzie and Lizzie Sawyer - With One Look - Lloyd Weber - Soloist Rosie Evans - Excerpts from Finale, Symphony No 1 - Rachmaninov arr. Phil Littlemore |

A huge achievement for the band who produced some magnificent performances in both the set-piece and entertainment programme contests. Winning a prize of £7000 and the fabulous Warwick Vase silver trophy, the band lead by conductor Jeremy Wise brings the title south to London for the first time in the contest's history. |
