I am a re-enactor with the Ottawa Valley American Civil War Historical Re-Enactment Society.(O.V.A.C.W.H.R.S.) I have been involved with this organization since 1994. I enetered the hobby because of my interest in the music of the era. Since then I have participated in many Re-enactments and other functions we attend.
If you have ever seen a re-enactment or the movie Gettysburgh, Glory,and/or Andersonville you will find that the majority of actors in these are re-enacters doing the thing we love best. It is one thing to see it but an entire other thing to be in line shoulder to shoulder on the battle field. I can't explain that feeling. It can only be felt when you are there.
What do I enjoy about this hobby. Well lets see. The Dances, Comradeship, Talking to the spectators, Siting around a fire at night and singing songs. There are many other things I could add to this list.
The thing that impressed me the most about this hobby is the fact that you can have 30,000 people armed with rifles, pistols etc. and not even a fist is thrown in anger.
The second thing that I love about this hobby is that it is family oriented and by itself is a huge family with everybody always willing to help each other out. What I did not know about the hobby like etiquette etc. there was alway a helping hand ready to teach me. I brought my skills to the unit and was able to become an integral part of the unit.
