Biography

Daniel T. McCarty was born in Fort Pierce, Florida on Jan. 18, 1912. He became a citrus grower and cattle rancher. In 1937 he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives where he served until 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, earning the following medals: the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the French Croz-de-Guerre, and reaching the rank of Colonel.

He was runner up for the Democratic nomination for Florida govenor in 1948. In 1952 he ran for govenor again, this time he was successful. During his tenure he reformed purchasing and hiring practices by the state government. He boosted teacher's salaries and created scholorships for teacher's training. He also opposed oil exploration in the Everglades, and instituted aid programs for the disabled. On Feb. 25, 1953 he suffered a fatal heart attack and died on Sept. 28, 1953.
