Biography

Freddie Ray Marshall was born in 1928 in Oak Grove, La. He lived in an orphanage, but joined the Navy at age 15 - having lied about his age.

After participating in WWII, Marshall attended Louisiana State University and Millsaps College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in economics.

He has held several academic posts, but since 1962 he's been at the University of Texas. His only exception was his term as U.S. Secretary of Labor as a member of Jimmy Carter's administration. As Secretary of Labor, Marshall expanded public service and job training programs, as part of Carter's economic stimulus plan.

He is the Professor Emeritus of the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Centennial Chair in Economics and Public Affairs at the University of Texas, Austin.
