SEASON 7 (1965 –1966)

Bonanza was the highest rated television series for this season.

"Do you realize there could be a "Bonanza" on television for the rest of our lives? After 12 years of first run episodes, there would be weekly reruns, then daytime strips and then off-network syndication. Why, it could keep going for 30 or 40 years." Lorne Greene, May 1966.

David Dortort considered marrying Joe off in this season, believing that this time the fans might accept a Cartwright getting married. He said, “Whether or not Little Joe gets married will depend on whether or not the fans want him to. In the first episode we’ll introduce the girl and the romance and if the girl is right – and if the fans go for it – then they’ll get married. But in such a major change, the audience reaction is the deciding factor. We’ll introduce the girl, then wait to gauge the fan’s reactions." August 1965.

David Dortort’s plan at the start of this season was to mention Adam regularly in the episodes. Adam was to be away from the Ponderosa studying engineering in the eastern United States and travelling in Europe, with the family receiving letters from him. “His correspondence from the major capitals of the world will be brought into every other episode to keep the character of Adam alive.”  David Dortort, August 1965.

David Dortort’s answer to the rumor that Pernell Roberts would return to Bonanza. “I can say no with absolute finality. Pernell was a disturbing influence. He argued with the other members of the cast, his directors, the cameraman and myself. He was dissatisfied with the show and he made his feelings known whenever the opportunity presented itself, which was often, and loud. I can foresee no way in which his return would be necessary or desirable, I assure you most emphatically.”

From, Western Stars of Television and Film 1966: The hat Hoss wears in the series is Dan's pride and joy. He recalls, "That hat was originally made for a Bob Hope movie. One day I popped it on my head as a joke. The "Bonanza" producer David Dortort, saw me in it, liked it, and I've worn it ever since."

Ben Cartwright needs to blow open the entrance to a mine which has been blocked off by a rockslide. So Adam sends a complete report on the new explosive, with detailed directions how to use it. According to an article: Kent McCray and directors like William Claxton spend days cruising through pine tree areas seeking places that are exactly right for specific scripts. A script may even be rewritten a bit to fit an especially beautiful location. One of these was this episode, shot almost entirely on location. It took McCray and Claxton two full days of four-wheel driving to find that location.

Blooper: At the beginning when Hoss is pretending to arm wrestle the little boy, Joe is leaning on a horse, then he has his arms crossed, leaning on the horse and then his arms crossed again.

Alex Sharp (stuntman on Bonanza) said that Michael was determined to learn how to do the Pony Express mount (swinging onto and mounting a running horse). The first time Michael tried it he fell and did a bit of damage to himself but he kept trying until he was able to do it.

According to David Dortort this is how they got the idea for this episode: “The very fact that Adam is mailing letters led to the investigation of the mail system in the Old West. That led to a two-part series on the Pony Express. It was perfect for Bonanza, because the Pony Express mail headquarters was located in Virginia City.” August, 1965.

Episode 221. Destiny's Child - First aired on January 30, 1966.

According to an article: The script called for Peabody (Guest star, Dick Peabody, one of the few men in Hollywood bigger than Hoss), to kill a maverick in a corral of wild horses with a piece of fence - made of balsa wood. What Peabody didn't realize was that the entire fence on the outdoor western street at paramount was of balsa. As he rammed the fence he stumbled right on through it and into the 16 wild horses, scattering them all over the Paramount lot. It took a crew of 60, including the ever-present professional wranglers, another half hour to restore order to that set.
