SEASON 7 (1965 –1966)
Bonanza
was the highest rated television series for this season.
"Do you realize there could be a "Bonanza" on television for the rest of our lives? After 12 years of first run episodes, there would be weekly reruns, then daytime strips and then off-network syndication. Why, it could keep going for 30 or 40 years." Lorne Greene, May 1966.
David Dortort considered marrying Joe off in this season, believing that this time the fans might accept a Cartwright getting married. He said, “Whether or not Little Joe gets married will depend on whether or not the fans want him to. In the first episode we’ll introduce the girl and the romance and if the girl is right – and if the fans go for it – then they’ll get married. But in such a major change, the audience reaction is the deciding factor. We’ll introduce the girl, then wait to gauge the fan’s reactions." August 1965.
David
Dortort’s
plan at the start of this season was to mention Adam regularly in
the episodes. Adam
was to be away from the Ponderosa studying engineering in the eastern
United
States and travelling in Europe, with the family receiving letters from
him. “His correspondence from the major capitals of the world will be
brought into every other episode to keep the character of Adam
alive.”
David Dortort, August 1965.
David
Dortort’s answer to the rumor that Pernell Roberts would return to Bonanza.
“I can say no with absolute finality. Pernell was a disturbing influence. He
argued with the other members of the cast, his directors, the cameraman and
myself. He was dissatisfied with the show and he made his feelings known
whenever the opportunity presented itself, which was often, and loud. I can
foresee no way in which his return would be necessary or desirable, I assure you
most emphatically.”
From, Western Stars of Television and Film 1966: The hat Hoss wears in the series is Dan's pride and joy. He recalls, "That hat was originally made for a Bob Hope movie. One day I popped it on my head as a joke. The "Bonanza" producer David Dortort, saw me in it, liked it, and I've worn it ever since."
