On the day of his wedding to Bella Donna, her brother, Julien – who opposed any kind of peace between the Guilds – challenged Remy to a duel. Remy won, apparently killing Julien and, although he had nothing to be guilty of, the Guilds demanded he be banished. Remy departed, not even asking his new wife if she wanted to join him. [Gambit (3rd series) #1, X-Men (2nd series) #8]
Gambit left New Orleans. However, a short time later, his control over his growing mutant power was slipping, making him a danger to everyone around him. Help came from an unexpected quarter: the evil scientist, Mr Sinister, performed surgery on Remy’s brain, excising some grey matter, and, in the process, limiting the young man’s power to a controllable level. [Gambit (3rd series) #14]
Little is known of Gambit’s actions and adventures over the next years, only that he became a superb thief and made many contacts (and quite a few enemies) during that time.
This last mission included collecting a group of superpowered mercenaries (among them a deadly enemy – Sabretooth – and a good friend – Grey Crow aka Scalphunter) and lead them into the tunnel of the subterranean mutant tribe called the Morlocks. Remy was under the mistaken belief that Sinister just wanted to gather knowledge on mutants or capture them. However, he was horrified to learn the truth, as the Marauders started slaughtering all Morlocks upon arriving.
Unable to stop the killers, he managed to at least save one little girl named Sarah from them and took her to safety. [Uncanny X-Men #350]
Gambit was horrified by the disaster he had wrought and sought to make amends in some way. A few years later, while attempting to separate an art owner in a mansion in Cairo, Illinois from his wealth, he ran into Storm. The X-Men’s leader had, at that point, been reduced to the age of a pre-teen by the mad villain, Nanny. Storm barely had any memories of her life as an X-Man and had returned to her thieving ways. Worse, she was being chased by the Shadow King and his Hounds.
