Two letters to the editor appeared in the August 23, 2005, edition of the Billings Gazette - both letters were written by officers of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars - both letters were critical of Montana Senator Conrad Burns and VP Dick Cheney for failing to properly display the American flag at a GOP fundraiser held in Billings.

"We all saw the photographs of Vice President Cheney and Sen. Burns on the front page of The Gazette during the recent fundraiser for the senator. What a shock to see that the American flag was posted incorrectly! According to the United States Flag Code, the American flag is to be posted to the speaker's right. When flags are posted in a line, the American flag is always posted on its own right, with all other flags to its left. When carried in a parade front with other flags, the United States flag is always to the marching right of the other flags. When I called Burns' office, I was informed that I was incorrect because the flags were posted according to White House instructions."
