BACCARA
A girl duo, who hit the top spot in the UK charts in 1978 with the disco influenced 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie'.  The single was an early example of camp Europop and was no doubt a floor-filler in disco clubs across the continent for a brief period. Maria Mendiola and Mayte Mateus hailed from Spain, although the song was written by the Dutch songwriting team Frank Dostal and Rolf Soja.

A follow-up single, 'Sorry I'm A Lady' reached number 8 in the UK, but the duo quickly disappeared as disco began to fade from the public consciousness in the aftermath of punk.

Whilst hardly a prolific group, hundreds of other acts have used the same simple pop formula to varying degress of success since their demise, although most have failed to sustain a prolonged career in the music industry, and many do not have the distinction of reaching number one with any of their releases.
