THE CHAMELEONS
Formed in Manchester (UK) in 1981 by Mark Burgess (vocals, bass), Reg Smithies (guitar), Dave Fielding (guitar) and Brian Schofield (drums), began by catching the attention of John Peel and recording some sessions in the BBC studios.  Soon, they were signed by Epic and released a single, 'In Shreds', but this failed to make any impact, so they switched to independent label Statik, where they released their first two albums.  'Script of the Bridge' and 'What Does Anything Mean Basically?' showed their talent for guitar-based anthems that had a strong sense of melody.

As a result of regular activity on the live circuit, they built up a fanbase and were signed to Geffen records.  Their third album 'Strange Times' garnered the praise of music critics, and everything was pointing to a breakthrough for the band until their manager died.  In the aftermath of this the band fragmented, leaving some quality recordings but none of the major success that they seemed to deserve.  A sign of the legacy that the band had left behind came soon after they split, with fellow John Peel favourites the Wedding Present citing them as a major influence.

The band members remained active in the music business after the split in 1990, and finally got back together in January 2000.  Gigs and further releases have followed.
