FABULOUS
One of the first bands to form and achieve media coverage following the Manic Street Preachers explosion onto the UK music scene, Fabulous were Simon Dudfield (vocals), Martin Goodacre (guitars), Hodge (drums), Russell Underwood (guitar) and Ronnie Fabulous (bass).

Managed by then NME editor James Brown, their ties with the music press were strengthened by two band members contributing articles and photographs regularly, and this connection was obviously exploited to the full when promoting their first single 'Destined To Be Free'.

As with the Manics, their manifesto borrowed from the Situationists, and in live performances their songs resembled the punky rock 'n' roll of the Sex Pistols, with singer Dudfield mimicking the stage antics of Iggy Pop.

Their main agenda was, in their words, to reinvent 1977 and remove the 'ecstasy mentality' from the UK music scene, and their rebellious stance was backed up with actions such as stealing a carpet from the offices of EMI.

Their closest brush with fame was  supporting the Beastie Boys at the London Marquee, but inevitably, their (not particlarly unique) take on the punk stance soon saw the public lose interest, though the band continued but remained underground, with the only column inches subsequently gained being in the pages of fanzines.

Ironically, the music press were shortly to create the 'new wave of new wave' scene, with bands like S*M*A*S*H and These Animal Men finding some degree of success using a similar, if slightly more inspired formula.
