LUNACHICKS | ||||||||
The rumour that Lunachicks were rescued from lives devoted to street gangs, drinking and terrorising fellow citizens by Sonic Youth helped to garner initial interest in the band, with their debut album 'Babysitters On Acid' launching them into the limelight almost as soon as they had set foot in the studio. Their output and live performances relied heavily on their 'bad girl' image, with a taste for sick humour and raucous, punk inspired buzzsaw guitars ensuring that their arrival did not go unnoticed. Becky (drums), Squid Sid (bass), Gina (lead guitar), and Sindi (guitar) provided the clattering background noise over which vocalist Theo intoned lyrics involving bodily functions and other unmentionable scenarios. She was also known to perform wearing blood-splattered wedding gowns. Whilst not seeming able to take as serious a stance as those bands closely linked to the riot-grrrl scene, the Lunachicks own particular brand of emancipation was nonetheless original, borrowing from Alice Cooper just as much as the usual influences of the Slits and Sonic Youth. Two further albums, 'Binge Purge' and 'Jerk Of All Trades' saw the initial shock of their arrival wear off, and interest in the band gradually subsided to the level of a small but devoted fanbase. 'Luxury Problem' was released in 1999, and the band continue to play gigs in the U.S. IF YOU LIKE THESE, YOU'LL LIKE THE LUNACHICKS: Sonic Youth, Babes In Toyland, The Slits, Hole, Joan Jett, The Breeders, The Pixies, The Plasmatics. |
