Having formed the Buzzcocks in the earlier days of the punk period, Howard Devoto left before mainstream success really hit home, and in April 1977 formed Magazine with John McGeogh (guitar), Barry Adamson (bass), Martin Jackson (drums), with keyboard player Bob Dickinson adding an element that set them in contrast with their peers. Indeed, their first gig at the Electric Circus in Manchester saw them unveil a cold, moody sound with harsh rhythms that was at odds with the current scene. Signed to Virgin Records, their legendary debut single 'Shot By Both Sides' was more tuneful than the majority of punk releases and is rightly regarded as a classic and early example of 'post-punk'. After several line-up changes, debut album 'Real Life' emerged in 1978, and despite its ambitious experimentation with the punk formula, the press misunderstood. The band were constantly in flux with members leaving and being replaced, McGeogh remained until 1980, whilst simultaneously taking part in Steve Strange's Visage project and performing and recording with Siouxsie and the Banshees. Despite their albums being a hit with music critics, their innovative mix of styles barely made any impact on the charts, with only 'Sweetheart Contract' coming close to any mainstream success. McGeoch's departure saw ex-Ultravox guitarist Robin Simon arrive as a replacement, and he himself would depart shortly before the band folded in 1981, with Devoto deciding that they had run their course. He would again re-emerge in the late 80's with a new band, Luxuria. Despite being around for only 4 years, their recorded legacy remains influential and does not sound dated, mainly due to their experimental attitude and angular rhythms. Indeed, their mix of styles finally saw mainstream success in the late '90's with Mansun emerging as UK chart stars and kindred spirits, confirming the Magazine influence by covering 'Shot By Both Sides' live.
