After renaming themselves Tura Satana, a new album 'Relief Through Release' emerged, followed by 'All Is Not Well', but the band split in 1998 due to internal tensions. Tairrie and drummer Marcelo Palomino stayed together and My Ruin burst into life with a debut album 'Speak and Destroy'. Their music had by now evolved into a dark, brooding mixture of grinding hardcore metal, flashes of melodic rock and the occasional ambient moment.
Despite this, and the emergence of 'Nu-Metal' over recent years as a popular genre, My Ruin have remained relative outsiders due to the lyrical content of their music. Dealing with issues such as male oppression, sexual, emotional and physical abuse, and the damaging effects of the glamour industry, their songs do not fit well with the rather obvious, emasculated releases from more successful artists such as Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach. Closer comparisons might be drawn with Marilyn Manson, and indeed, My Ruin's debut album featured a cover of Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' several years before Marilyn Manson took the same song into the charts.
A new line-up recorded the heavier follow-up album, 'A Prayer Under Pressure, Of Violent Anguish', in 2000, with Tairrie again proving her credentials as a powerful vocalist over grinding guitars and pounding drums. Further personnel changes occurred before a live album 'To Britain With Love & Bruises' emerged in 2001. Additional proof of My Ruin's more diverse influences than most other metal acts can be found in their cover version of 'Do You Love Me' by Nick Cave.
