Wushu Competitions in China have a long established history. In ancient China, people often set up a challenge arena or platform for the title holder to take challenge from others. Such contests were usually part of celebrations at local festival, and an important means for Wushu masters to exhange skills and experience. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Wushu was listed as an official competitive sport. The sport’s annual national competitions include: The National Wushu Championships The Junior National Wushu Championships All China Sports Games National Taiji & Taiji Jian (Taiji Sword) Championships As you can see I have decided to focus mainly on the “National Wushu Championships” This is the annual championship to name the top ranking male and female athletes from top level teams throughout China. Unlike the All-China Sports Games, this means that not only the athletes from provincial teams enter, but also those from top sports institutes aswell. There are also no compulsory routines, only the athletes individual routines are permited. Because Wushu competitions are so diverse and have many different events I will try to explain in a little more detail about each event.
