Louis Leung-Ching Kwan was born in Hong Kong on June 21, 1959.  Born to parentage of Chinese emigre of Cantonese descent, he was the youngest in his family.  His father, having been trained as a civil engineer in Northern China, has  ancestral origin from Hoiping (Kaiping) of the Siyi townships.  Louis, together with his brothers and sisters, were admitted to the affiliated junior sections of Pui Ching Middle School of Hong Kong.

After completing Form 3 (equivalent to Year 9) at the Chinese-medium Pui Ching, Louis was transferred to the English-taught CCC Ming Kei College, which was again a Christian school but operated by American missionaries.  He finished his senior secondary and matriculation education there before heading for Taiwan for university studies.  He obtained his BA in Philosophy (cum laude) at National Taiwan University (NTU) in 1985.  Upon graduation, he moved to Taichung and did his MA work in Tunghai University.  He studied Mencius under the supervision of Prof. Tsai Jen-Hou, and in 1988 he headed for the US for further studies.

He had studied in Duquesne University at Pennsylvannia, and later changed to the University of Nebraska before returning to Duquesne.  Having secured his MA and PhD candidature, he started teaching philosophy at Providence University in Taiwan in 2002.   He extended his interest in business at the same time and briefly worked in marketing.   He further joined the general education faculties of National Taichung Institute of Technology and Yuda Institute of Technology, lecturing on sociology at the former and philosophy at the latter.

Louis passed away prematurely on May 7, 2005 in Taichung County, of acute myocardiac infarction.  He was 45.  He was laid to rest in peace in Wuchi, a remote offshore of Taichung Harbour.  He remained unmarried throughout his life, and is survived by his father and siblings.
