*NOTE* The Papal Tiara was surrendered at the end of Vatican II by Pope Paul VI and given to the United States. It was claimed that the tiara, the coronation and the majestic nature of the Papacy was not in keeping with the "spirit" of the Vatican II Council as defined by many liberals of the Catholic Church. Although the tiara is still used in the coat of arms, no Pope since Paul VI has made use of it. However, according to Catholic author Charles Coulombe, Pope John Paul I apologized for not being crowned and Pope John Paul II has indicated that the tradition could be revived in the future. |
