Welcome to Japan on portuguese stamps

The portuguese discovereres were the first european visitors to arrive in Japan by 1543 in the edge of the Muromachi period ( 1316-1573 ) .

At that time , the portuguese were called « Nambam » , wich means « Barbarian from the South » by the Japaneese , due to the lack of cortesy measures .

Since that time , a relation between the two countries was build , and it is represented in some philatelic material .

However this great relationship finished in 1614 , when the Tokugawa Dinasty decides to expel the foreight from Japan . This measure was influence by the growing influence of the missionary in the japaneese internal affairs .
