My  Richmond Family  History was not as  uninteresting as I once  thought!
Flow chart to help follow my branch, Burnham,Maldon Essex, Victoria, Tasmania WA.etc HERE
When I saw this letter below I realised there was something worth investigating in our family tree .It was written from Tasmania by Henry James Richmond [HJR] my great grandfather to one of his sons in London .
Dear Herbert,             1930 Devonport Tas.

I don't think you will have much success in your proposed search for our ancestors, as I don’t believe we had  any.
At any rate, you would have a century to get over - 75 years of mine and 25 of my father’s .... ” [Captain William "Harridance" Richmond]

This and some  more letters to Herbert together with some  memoirs he had  published in a local newspaper when he was aged about 80 gave me clues where to go with my  research for the truth.

I have made a book of our history- on CD- for cousins via snail mail - email new edition of April 2004 incudes  parts of a "new"  personal log book of  William Richmond [1828-1856] from 1843 onwards. This includes shopping lists for silver buttons colgne and brandy among drawings of ports and part of a love letter and poetry and detailed descriptions of travels past Egypt to Smyrna Turkey  to Liverpool and to Singapore and Hong Kong. Also a child's  drawings by "Harry" his son Henry James Richmond

This research has been going on since 1985 and  the website reflects the ongoing nature of research... much help has been given to me by cousin Margaret Hope Richmond of Devonport, Tasmania who has collected an amazing amount of family history and allowed me to see it.  It has helped that her paternal grandmother retired in to the house Margaret has lived all her life in. Some of what she has stored was collected by Ruth Richmond daughter of Herbert Richmond. Ruth began her research aged 10 with her father in London when she  met cousin Elizabeth Arnold nee Mason and continued her research when she was in her 20s in London with cousin Margaret. Some of her research was it seems, from sources not available now and not quoted by her. And we are led to believe she did not write all she knew...
Expanded Drop down tree from William Richmond 1732  through Sarah Richmond, mother of  Captain William "Harridance" Richmond (b 1828 Maldon, Essex)  the first to live in Australia and father of Henry James Richmond who died 1938 Tasmania, Australia.

Our Harridance line has probably died out.
I have not found any evidence that Henry Harridance 3 or his brother ever married.  But Henry Harridance late 1700s was member of an Independant Chapel in Maldon, Essex
Our direct  Harridance line must have died out: but Henry had a brother with living descendants we have made contact with. 2007.
The 1881 Census London Surrey shows
Henry Harridance  bc 1827 Maldon  living in Camberwell England with his wife  Rosalie C. nee WILLIAMSON  or LOARING  from Yarcombe, Devon and two  sons:
Henry Harridance III aged 25 born Sept quarter  1855 Maldon Essex died 1908.
Frank Harridance aged 21 born Sept quarter 1859 Maldon. Directories show him  at Wandsworth London, occupation commercial traveler in 1914 .
Look here at 1881 census London-  Harridance and see  name and birthplace and their occupations and exact address and friends and borders.

We are searching for proof of  relationsips of these people:
One version of the  Richmond  family  tree here.

Parents of Samuel Richmond, [ drop tree] 1795 - 1877 in Burnham  Essex, father of
James Richmond 1819-1909 , HMS Customs Officer, Burnham and Brighton England.
Parents of Fanny Richmond, b.c 1795 aunt of Sarah R b1810
Parents of Elizabeth Stammers (nee Richmond sister of Fanny), bc1790 - and any descendants
all said they were born Burnham-on-Crouch and the church records for this period were lost I am informed by Canadian researcher.

JAMES RICHMOND
James Richmond [photos and descendants] (b1819), master mariner then H.M.Customs Officer, and oyster merchant, married Eliza CRANMER of Mersea Island. Eliza was the daughter of Alexander Cranmer, publican, of Mersea Island. James and Eliza lived in Burnham, and Brighton, and probably other ports.

James Richmond and his brother Samuel (1820-23) both born Burnham, were the only known children of Samuel and Eliza Richmond. Probably the Samuel Richmond (mariner), bc 1796 "of Burnham" who married 1815 to Eliza (NEWMAN ) in Burnham.yes when Samuel mariner, died his son James Richmond was with him 1877, Burnham.

JAMES RICHMOND's son  JOHN RICHMOND  b.c 1856 Rochford - we have  lost track of his descendants  -  no found some in London and his children listed [ 2008]  some information now see James Richmonds page.
He was mentioned in his fathers will. In this will James Richmond  left his oyster business to his eldest son, [pic] Alexander Richmond [photo with wife and all children- twins].
Also John Richmond of London,  is  his brother on  Thomas Richmond's death certificate in Edinburgh, Scoltland

HEIRLOOMS
This horn cup engraved (scrimshaw) with English hunting scenes and "RICHMOND "done around 1820-30. Probably this belonged to William Richmond [de facto? ]  husband of Hannah Waller. The "common grandfather" of Elizabeth Arnold nee Mason mentioned it in 1921 when writing to Henry James Richmond of Tasmania. [Actually common great grandfather]  James Richmond's (b 1819)  descendants in London have it.

A popular motif back in the 1800s!

Fanny Richmond
Oil painting of Fanny Richmond ("bc 1795 Burnham"), painted c.1830 believed to be by Sir John Gilbert a Royal Ademician, who died 1897.

Fanny Richmond was the housekeeper of Henry Harridance (c1793-1858) and his son Henry Harridance "The Younger" bc1826 of High Street, Maldon for at least 18 years from 1841.

My great grandfather Henry James Richmond refused to take possession of this painting in 1930s. After the death of his father he had lived in Maldon with his grandfather Henry Harridance and in the same house as Fanny Richmond

Fanny Richmond had not been married and had no descendants by 1920, which  would explain why Henry James Richmond [ b.1854 Victoria d.1936 Tasmania]  was being offered this oil painting in 1921 by Elizabeth Arnold (nee Mason) a cousin who was a childless, a music teacher, linguist and great letter writer who  kept cousins well  informed in 1920!  Elizabeth Mason [Essex] and Henry James Richmond [Tasmania] had  a common grandmother - Sarah Richmond [Mrs James.Mason] b 1809 BBurnham - Wantz Rd, died Maldon aged 83.

Fanny Richmond died Maldon Essex left a will with 40 pounds to her sister Elizabeth STAMMERS. The rest of her estate went  to her nephew James MASON  the "younger", neice Elizabeth Fanny MASON.

Sarah Richmond,  was born 11 Dec. 1809, baptized 11 March 1810, St Mary’s Burnham- on-Crouch daughter of Hannah Waller and William Richmond.  Died 1881 Maldon essex.
She was the niece of Fanny Richmond born Burnham.
Her first child was William Richmond b 1828 at Maldon but baptised in Burnham on Crouch. This was the parish she was born in and thus it was responsible for helping her as needed for life and including raising William as the father was not named.

Sarah Richmond  was married in St Leonards Shoreditch 20 Nov.1829 to James MASON and the witness for the bride was Fanny Richmond her aunt as her  mother was dead.  Also witnesses James Cranmerand John [Young?]

The 1841census Maldon, Sarah Mason [née Richmond], aged 35  wife of James Mason aged 34, mariner, [born c 1807] and
James Mason son aged 4 at living in the High St. Maldon.

By 1848 Sarah (née Richmond) Mason lived in Butt Lane. From a property sale “brochure” 1848, the “Masons” rented a “recently-erected” one of 3 tenements of four rooms with ”Garden Ground” front and back forming a frontage to Butt Lane which was being rented for 7 pounds a year. This house is about 60 feet from The Rose and Crown pub on the corner of High Street and Butt Lane, Maldon, Essex. The Quaker house and cemetery is down this road which leads to the Jolly Sailor pub, River and Quay.

The 1851 Maldon census shows that
Sarah Mason aged 41, born Burnham, was married and living in Butt Lane, with  James Mason, (Jr.) aged 14 &
Elizabeth Mason aged  born Maldon. Captain James Mason was probably at sea.

Sarah Mason  became guardian of her grandson Henry James Richmond in 1864.
1881 Census Maldon  mid year shows  Sarah Mason, the sole occupant, living Wantz Rd, Maldon,  born Burnham c1803 .

1881 Death Certificate
Sarah Mason’s death certificate shows it is our Sarah as when she died 17 November 1881 widow, of James Mason seaman, aged 71,  her son James Mason was present at death, caused by  “general decay” , at Wantz Rd, died Maldon

OTHER  RICHMOND FAMILYs OF  ESSEX

HANNAH RICHMOND  b1801 in Burnham Essex,
