Eliza HEWETT [on VPRS marriage indexes] married Wm Richmond, 1876 and died 1915 Wedderburn. After William Richmond and 2 sons William Edgar and Herbert Gilbert Richmond went to Western Australia 1901, Eliza set herself up running a boarding house for sober Christians .

William Richmond was
born in Keilor, Victoria, to William Richmond of Maldon, Essex, and Eliza
Sarah Dyer of Hammersmith, London. His father died 6 weeks after his birth
and a month of so later he travelled to England with his mother and older
brother.
His mother Eliza Sarah DYER
b Hammersmith. Eliza (Dyer) Richmond had a 2nd marriage in 1862 Vic.
to George Carirncross b Scotland - , she died 1900 Wedderburn.
He returned to Victoria
with his mother a few years later. When he was about 6 his mother married
one George Carirncross, draper, of Ballarat, Vic.
Then in 1865 he travelled
to the Hokitka west coast of New Zealand with his elder brother who
had just returned from boarding school in England. They sailed on the "Gothenberg"
under the name of their step father George Carirncross. The family then
lived 3 years in Westlands area of NZ, a wild, gold prospecting region
until returning to Victoria. William, then around 11 years old, must have
lived at Hexham, where George became licensee of the local pub, near Mortlake,
in the Western District. William's chance of getting a good education at
these remote places was probably not good.
After William's marriage
to Eliza Hewett, born Kew, Vic, he lived from about 1877 to 1902 in Wedderburn.
They may have met and married
there too?
They registered the births
of 8 children there between 1878 and 1892. While there he was a travelling
salesman and probably did some gold prospecting it seems he always
lived from early childhood where there was likely to be gold!
On August 17, 1900
there was an advertisement in the local Wedderburn Express listing William
as a candidate for the local Korong Shire elections. But on August 10th
his mother, Eliza Carirncross who had probably been living with William
and his wife at Wedderburn, died. I could find no record of him being
elected a local politician.
In 1901 he moved to Western
Australia with 2 of his 3 sons, - this may not be right even
though this obituary seems to indicate it is ? see
obituary William "Edgar" and Henry "Bunny". Perhaps he
settled at Kattanning to farm or maybe he was lured to the newly discovered
gold fields there? (This place is about half way between Albany and Perth)
His wife Eliza Hewett, died 1915 in Victoria having supported herself with
providing accommodation for non-drinkers. At the "Temperance House" in
Bendigo
or Wedderburn?
Some time later William
moved back to Victoria ...don't know when? and he was living in Richmond,
Melbourne just before his death in the Austin Hospital in 1932.
