The Son Tay Raid
American prisoners held in a hostile land captivated the hearts and minds of Americans at home. With the war looking to be unwinnable, and peace looking like a longshot, America mounted an operation to liberate the POWs at a camp less than 30 miles from Hanoi. Concieved in secrecy and carried out with daring precision, the raid promised to be just what America needed. However, no POWs were found at the Son Tay camp. The raiders returned home empty handed. But the raid can be considered a success for the simple fact that it showed the North Vietnamese that they were not safe anywhere from American reprisals. American POWs were soon consolidated in larger camps, and men who had been isolated for years were now with their comrades.
