Radio Trunking

The Radio trunking system is an enhanced version of the vhf radios and offers facilities like mobile to mobile call, mobile to landline call ,landline to mobile call, group call etc. The key difference is that all calls are routed and controlled by a Radio trunk controller just like as in a normal telephone where all calls are routed via a exchange. The heart of the system is the radio controller which performs all the signalling, trunking and telephone interconnect functions including subscriber validation and call record accounting. The system comes in a number of channels.  One channel utilizes TWO frequencies (transmit and receive)  spaced 5 MHz apart for its working. Number of channels determines number of  simultaneous calls at a time. Essentially, a radio trunk controller comprises of  controller electronics hooked to a VHF repeater unit. The controller offers features like clear channel alerting, remote radio kill etc.

The subscriber radios are normal VHF sets with additional trunk(logic) card. Each of these radios are allotted a caller ID from the controller for performing the various calls.

The key advantage is telephone connectivity, which though also can be done by a telephone patch leaves much to be desired. A trunk network is called a poor man cellular network because of its low costs. The range of the system is determined by the range of the subscriber handsets as it has to access the  radio controller for its functioning.
