This is General George Stoneman. He was the Union cavalry commander who raided into Southwest Virginia in the Winter of 1865, taking part of the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry with him. He was immortalized in a song written by J. Robbie Robertson (a Canadian) more than one hundred years later: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
