Running Man Recreation Association
Summer News, July 22, 2000
Hope everyone is enjoying their pool this summer. I went by tonight after work and was thrilled to see the clubhouse and pool "crawling" with swimmers and parents as the swim team took on the Riverdale group. I'm sure our team represented us well. Below are a few notes of general interest. If you have questions or topics you'd like to see here please let me know and we'll put them out. Don't forget the RMRA website, "rmra.homepage.com" as a great resource for specific membership information and general info about the Association and our facilities. Check it out! Dan Murri has done a wonderful job of creating and keeping it current.
Our gatekeepers are doing a great job for us. While we had originally hoped we could do without this function it quickly became clear that we needed to provide positive control over who comes in to swim. It is important for two reasons. First, we have a way to ensure only RMRA members or their guests gain admittance to the facility and second, it lets us get the word out to those that may "owe a wee bit" on their dues. They have also taken on the task of selling snacks for us which helps offset the cost of that function. Steve Barneyback and Liz Bryant have done a fine job of setting up the operation and working though the myriad of thankless purchasing, scheduling, timecard, supervision and inventory details. Gatekeepers also added a significant increase in activity for our Treasurer, Sam Motley. As usual he handled it with a minimum of fuss in a very professional manner. We're very fortunate to have these volunteers on the Board devoting significant amount of their time to the RMRA.
We want your pictures! Even though the summer is half over we need family or individual photographs of every member so the gatekeepers can positively identify our membership. We'll take care of trimming and mounting them, just bring us a snapshot of you and the family that you can part with. Brian and Judy McCormick have volunteered to take on this "less than glamorous" task for us. You may call them for further details but please check for that extra photo and drop it with the gatekeepers.
The swim team is donating a display case to the Association. This will house swim team records and have space for general informational notices as well. It should be completed and mounted soon. We are also purchasing an outdoor clock to be installed immediately. Both these items were suggested from the members. While we can't do everything at once we do want to hear your suggestions. Speaking of doing things, the Board approved the purchase of a pool cover at the July 11th meeting. This will be ordered shortly and installed at the close of the season. While an expensive item (our budget will cover it) it protects our investment and should prevent costly plaster repair work in the spring.
It has also been suggested that we could sell ice cream and popcicles if we had a freezer. The Board is interested and now searching for a good used one. If anyone has a lead, either for sale, or as a donation, let us know.
The pay phone has been installed and is working. It costs 35 cents a call and has a free 911 number available all the time. It can also receive incoming calls, the number is 867-9827. Of course there is no guarantee anyone will answer it if you call in. This is the phone to use rather than the lifeguard line.
One last item. Judy McCormick has volunteered to be the point of contact for early morning adult lap swimming. Hours are tentatively scheduled from 6:00 to 8:00 AM for those adults interested. Please call her if you're interested in this adult's only activity.
Sincerely,
Phil Comstock, President
