Robert and Anna discuss his idea of convincing Sean that they are no longer an item.
Robert: I think I've come up with a way of convincing Sean that you no longer work for me. Anna: Oh good, tell me. Robert: We'll stage a fight. Anna: Well it's going to have to be a knockout fight to persuade Sean that we've gone our separate ways. Robert: Not necessarily. Anna: Look, a simple argument won't sway Sean. Robert: This one will. Anna: I don't understand. Robert: I can guarantee you that Sean will have no doubts in his mind as to who's side you're on. Anna: Alright. What do you want us to do? Robert: I can't tell you. Anna: Well how am I gonna help you if I don't know what the plan is? Robert: Look if it's gonna work, it's gotta take you by surprise. Otherwise, Sean's never gonna buy it. Anna: Well, I'm a pretty good actress. Robert: Not this good. I need you to act spontaneously. Anna: Alright. Will I get any warning? Robert: Yeah. I'll signal you. When I do, uh, act as if you've got something in your eye. Anna: Then what? Robert: Leave the rest to me. Anna: Oh I don't know Robert. I mean, what if this doesn't work? Robert: I have a backup plan in case Sean needs further convincing. Anna: Oh good. And I suppose I'll be kept in the dark about that too, won't I? Robert: No. If necessary, you'll be giving him back the jewels that you purchased from Slater in New York. Anna: Well that is drastic. Robert: They represent another part of the treasure that Sean needs. At least he thinks he does. So if you help him complete the collection, that should win him over. Anna: Well it certainly would impress him. Robert: Remember. You don't give those up unless it's an absolute last resort. (He hands her a black satchel containing the jewels). You've gotta hope that the fight's gonna work. Next Scene- Everyone is at the picnic grounds, the Hardy's, the Quartermaines, Frisco, Felicia, Grant, Buzz, and Sean. Robert approaches Anna. Robert: Well, I think I know something that's gonna light his fire. You ready? Anna: As I'll ever be. Robert: Then let's see the curtain go up. (They join the picnic) Anna: Sorry we're late. Oh, ow! (Robert reacts) I don't know something flew in my eye. Robert: Just a minute. Let's have a look. (He holds her head in his hands and pretends to check out her eye) Hold it. Easy. Monica: Robert, here. I have a napkin. (Sean gets up to help) Robert (still holding Anna's face) Thank you. It's okay. Really. Anna (feigning discomfort) Get it out. Get it out. Robert: Easy, easy. (He pretends to use the napkin and in one swift motion, he rips Anna's scar off. Everyone is shocked, including Anna) Anna: Robert! Robert: What's this, your scar? Anna: I can explain Robert. Robert: You taped a phony scar to your face? Anna: Please Robert. You were never supposed to know. Robert: I'll bet I wasn't. You didn't want me to know what a fool you'd made out of me! Anna: You don't understand! (Anna starts crying as everyone looks on) Robert: Hell you say. Anna: Robert please! Robert: I understand everything completely. Anna: Please I can explain. Let me... Robert: There's nothing you could possibly say that's gonna explain... Sean: Robert, just a second. (He tries to grab his arm. Robert breaks the hold) Robert: Butt out! Anna: Robert please! I never meant you to know, please! Robert: There's nothing going on here. There is however one thing I want to know. Anna: I don't have to hear this. I don't want to listen. (She tries to leave but Robert grabs her) Robert: You'll bloody well listen! (shaking her) You will listen! Sean (trying to help) Easy! Robert: You know it's one thing to be a compulsive liar, but another thing to turn around and destroy a man's life! Anna: I never did that! Robert: What lengths will you go to get whatever you want? You stole me from my wife! You messed up my marriage! I guess I'm lucky you didn't turn around and stab me in the back! Anna: Why don't you listen to my side of the story? Robert: I'm not interested. I'm fed up with your lies. However, I would like to know one thing. Were you gonna tell me about this before or after I divorced Holly? Anna: I don't know Robert: Well, you won't have to worry about it anymore. Because there's not gonna be any divorce. I'll do anything I can to patch up that marriage! I'll grovel. I'll whatever! And I just hope that she'll understand when I explain to her. If you were the last woman on this earth, I wouldn't have anything to do with you. You know where I stand now? (You can see the genuine hurt in Anna's eyes. The conductor sounds the train's horn) Sean: Alright everyone, let's get back to the train. (Robert and Anna stand there facing each other while everyone moves around them. She slowly sits herself down on a bench and stares ahead numbly. The tears just roll down her face. Robert goes over to Frisco and Felicia) Robert: Stall the train. I need time for the telegram to get here. (Frisco doesn't answer. He just stares at Anna crying) Frisco? Frisco: Yeah I heard you. When you play, you really play hardball, don't you? (He walks away with Felicia in tow leaving Robert feeling very badly about what he did) The Scene returns. The guests have all boarded the train. Robert goes looking for Anna. Frisco and Felicia try and divert Sean's attention. Robert finds out she's on the observation platform of the train. Felicia: Robert? Robert: Yes? Felicia (hesitant) Be gentle with Anna. That was a terrible thing you did... ripping off her scar in front of everyone. Robert (saddened) Yes I know. Frisco: It sort of rocked us, I guess you could say. Robert: The idea was to rock Sean. Frisco: Well, I guess you know what you're doing. We'll take care of things in here. Robert: Good. (He goes out to the platform and finds her staring off at the night.) How did it go at the picnic? Did Sean buy our little pla... Anna (whirls around to face him) How could you! Robert (in an apologetic tone) Anna. Anna: You violated a very very private thing! I mean, taking my scar off in front of everyone! How could you do that? (She turns her back to him, teary eyed) Robert (tries to approach her, but hesitates) I'm so sorry. But the scar ploy was the most convincing thing I could think of. Anna (faces him calmly) I know it was. Robert: I apologize. Anna (composing herself) It's just as well you didn't tell me in advance. The shock was really genuine. Robert: Sean would have seen through anything that wasn't genuine. Anna: Yeah. I know that. Look, I'll be alright in a minute. (They stand in silence for a bit) Robert: Looking back, I think it's the most difficult thing I've ever had to do in my life. Anna: Oh please. Please don't say that. Robert: It was ruthless. Anna: Yeah. But Sean believed it. That's all that really matters. (She avoids looking at him) Robert: Are you sure? Anna: Yeah. Robert: Alright. Otherwise it might be too dangerous. Anna: Look, all I have to do is prove my loyalty to him. Robert: Then it is too dangerous. And I've gotta find some way to get you out of this. Anna: No, no wait. Let me tell you what it is. He wants me to give him the jewels. The jewels that Slater sold me in New York. Robert: As proof? Anna: A kind of down payment. Uh, Robert, you're running this operation. What do you want me to do? Robert: I always told you to use those jewels when you thought you had to. Anna: Alright. I think I have to. Robert: Then give them to him. Anna: He's gonna want more. Robert: The bracelet and the necklace? Anna: Yes. Robert: You better tell me when he asks for them. Anna: How do I get them? Robert (laughs) That's right. Celia's gonna be sporting them at the wedding tomorrow. Anna: Yeah. I can hardly go up to her and ask her to give them to me. She thinks I stole you away from Holly, remember? Robert: Especially in view of the little scene we put on at the picnic yesterday. Anna (getting emotional) You know I feel quite friendless now. Robert: Anna. Anna: I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that really. This is exactly how I should be. Sean should think that I'm quite alone. Robert: I hate this! Anna: Well we can't stop now. I mean, too much has gone into it. Robert: Of course. Anna: Perhaps you could think of a way I can get my hands on the necklace and bracelet. Robert: I'll work on it. Anna: Alright. (She pauses) Robert, look. This whole operation- it depends on you being quite ruthless. Don't worry about me. I'll get over it. Robert: Thanks. For letting me off the hook. |
