The scene takes place at Robert's house just after a local news reporter bashed his name in the paper. Robert was walking in the door just as Anna was walking out...
Anna: Oh! Robert: What are you doing here? Anna: I was just about to ask you the same thing. Robert: Well, apart from the fact that I happen to live here, I forgot some papers. (he walks past her) Anna: I know one paper that you'd dearly love to forget. Ian Sheldon. He certainly did a number on you, didn't he? Robert: To your delight of course. Anna: Nooo…absolutely not. I was horrified. Robert: Sure you were. Anna: Robert, believe it or not, I have a great deal of respect for you. Robert: Odd, you have a funny way of showing it. Anna: I hated to see you dragged through the mud like that. You didn't deserve such a trashing. What on earth have you done to antagonize the press like that? Robert: (shuffling through some papers) I chewed out an editor who deserved a lot worse. Anna: Tact, hmm. That was never your long suit, was it? Robert: You oughta know. (Anna makes a face at him, then they stare at each other for a moment. He breaks the trance, which is pretty intense) Well, anyway what are you doing home from work at this hour? Sean come to his senses and give you the push? (he gives her a sarcastic grin) Anna: (moving her hair away from her scar) You wish. No actually I came back to pack. Robert: Why? Anna: I'm moving into a hotel. Robert: To what do I owe this good fortune? Anna: Well, I thought with Holly going away and everything (went with Celia to New York) and me staying here, you know it would just furnish Mr. Sheldon with even more scandal for his newspaper. (she smiles teasingly) Robert: Not likely. You're safer here than you would be in a convent. Anna: Hmm. So you have been thinking about me. Robert: Don't flatter yourself. Anna: No, I'd have had to been on your mind for you to have said something like that. Robert (sneers) You're a dreamer. Anna: Come on, Robert. Admit it. You want me, don't you? Robert (comes closer to her, electricity in the air) Sure I want you... out of this town and the sooner the better. Anna: (visibly hurt by his words) Well, don't hold your breath. I'm uh... (she moves her hair away from her scar again) ... trying for another operation, remember? Robert: (he pauses and stares at her) You do that so well. Anna: What? Robert: Flash your scar. I don't need reminding as to what you look like and what you are. Anna: (shocked by his words) Well, we'll see, shall we. I may just catch you out yet. (she walks out, leaving him to sulk.) |
