Anna, still untrusting of Sean even though she’s working with him, secretly goes to his warehouse in search of the missing Aztec treasure. This scene starts with her tapping on walls to find hollow or secret compartments. Robert walks in on her.
Robert: You're wasting your time if you're searching for a false wall. Anna: Oh Robert. You startled me. (She dusts herself off) Robert: Well, you should have posted a lookout. Anna: No, I'm in this one on my own. Robert: Well, you wanna go and conduct your own little private treasure search, go ahead. But there's nothing in this warehouse. (He goes to leave) Anna: (stops him) Robert! I wanna talk to you! Robert: I don't really think that there's much point. Anna: Oh, I can't stand the way you look at me anymore. (pause) I wanna tell you something you don't know. Robert: Another lie? Anna: No, it's the truth! Robert: You wouldn't know the truth if it jumped up and bit you. Anna: I want you to stop judging me and listen to me long enough to hear what I have to say! (She grabs his arm in a desperate plea, he looks at her hand on his arm and pulls away as if she burned him.) Robert: Alright. The truth. That's if you're capable of telling it. The scene ends, then returns later... Anna: I want to talk about the past, Robert. Robert: The past is dead and buried. Anna: Look, I'm sorry what happened to the Swede... that Sean killed him thinking that he was the double agent. (She closes her eyes in regret.) Robert: (looks at her) Are you really, Anna? Anna (hurt by his question) I have to live with it! Don't make it any worse. Robert: Alright. You want to talk about the past. I'm listening. Anna: Oh, you're so cold, so uncaring. Robert: Yeah, well you made me that way. Anna: I know. Look, believe me. Because I swear on our marriage vows. That was a very sacred day to me. I promised to love you and be faithful to you for the rest of my life. (Robert coldly looks at her as she starts to cry) Well, I've done both those things. Robert: Touching. (He turns away and she follows him) Anna: You're making this very difficult for me, you know. I want to talk about what happened before you shot Bronson. Robert (in a sneering tone) The DVX agent? Your rendezvous contact? Anna: Yeah, the explosion. Robert: Oh, believe me I remember that. Very clearly. Anna: I want to talk about what happened *before* that. Robert: Why should I listen to this? (He turns again to leave and she grabs him again) Anna: Oh, you must! You must. (She composes herself) I've been able to survive all these years without you because I didn't have to see this look in your eyes. Robert: Well, there's an easy solution to that. Leave Port Charles. Anna: I can't! Because I'd be haunted by your look for the rest of my life. You know, I don't think you're going to be able to get over me so easily this time either. Robert: I think you should speak for yourself, Anna. Anna: Alright. I'll start at the beginning. I was a...double agent. Robert: Well that's at least the truth. Anna: I've never denied that. Robert: No, but you seem to expect me to excuse it. Anna: No, I want to explain it to you. It's an explanation that ended almost the first time I saw you...in Sean's office in Paris. Robert: I think there must be a great deal to cover. Anna: No, I can make it simple for you. (She pauses and then looks away from him as she begins to speak again) I was born into a very rich family and all of that ended really when my parents died. Overnight, we were just penniless. Robert: Look, I've seen your resume`. I know that you were dumped on the doorstep of a poor but honest aunt and uncle. Anna: Resumes are just facts! Robert: Which I would prefer to stick to. Anna: Well you can't find human emotions and failings in a resume` and they're facts also. Now why don't you just listen to what I have to say! Robert: Go on. Anna: Thank you. You see, I had these dreams. (She starts crying) I had these dreams of fun and excitement and danger and money. And where can you find those dreams? Where can you make them come true, Robert? Robert: You joined the WSB. But what about the DVX? Anna: Oh. Well, they approached me and it was...just more excitement. I don't know. I was living the ultimate adventure. I was a double agent! (Smiles but then gets serious again) Until I met you. I really thought I was alive and living until that moment. And then I realized it was all just a pretense. You changed all that for me. Robert: I didn't realize I'd done all that to you. Anna: You asked me to leave the WSB. Well I was ready for that. But the DVX-well it wasn't that simple. Robert: Alright. So they wouldn't let you leave. Anna: Oh yeah, they said I could go, if I did this final assignment. Robert: That's when you should have said 'Good-bye Charlie'. Anna: Robert I couldn't! If I hadn't done this final assignment, they were gonna kill you! Robert (faces her slowly and stares at her for what seems like eons before he speaks) I don't believe a word of it. Anna (shocked, hurt, and crying) Oh. You don't believe a word I say? Robert: Not a word. Anna: (pulls her hair back from her face in frustration) You are killing me! Not believing anything I say. Robert: Oh I don't know. You look alright to me. Anna nods her head in understanding of his hurtful words and she runs out of the warehouse. You can see a moment of regret on Robert's face and he turns to go after her as she cries outside, but he just watches her for a moment, stops himself, and goes back inside. |
