I got a job as a saleswoman in carpeting and furniture and earned a decent living but had no time for anything but work. Guy's passing completely escaped me. When I finally got the Disney Channel in l994, I saw that Zorro was playing. What a delight to see it in color. There was my wonderful Zorro, the best Zorro, again just as I remembered him. The programs came on every weekend. I taped a few, but only the ones I was able to catch, none in order. They ended and I put the tapes away and forgot about Zorro again. Then last February, l998, I saw that Zorro was playing every night at 12. It was disappointing that it was in B&W. What happed to the color? The episodes were OK - about some Governor staying at the de la Vega hacienda. They got boring after that. But still it was Zorro. All of a sudden, the following day, without warning, the program came on in color! A Spanish galleon was pictured with a caption "Spanish California, l820". I was so excited. I knew that this was the very first show. Religiously, I started to tape. It only took two or three days. Guy was so appealing. I was fixated. By the end of the week, I knew I was hooked. I had always loved him, but this feeling was new. I had discovered Guy as never before. I had signed up with AOL for 30 free service months before and had not used the Internet or any of my time at all. Now, it suddenly occurred to me that I might be able to find out some information on Guy on the Web. What were these things called "search engines"? I knew about one called Yahoo. Somehow I got connected. I did a search on Guy Williams and Zorro and found Bill Cotter's site, and from there Steve's tribute to his Dad. What a shock to learn that Guy had died. Where had I been when that happened? The grief has not ceased, folks. I decided to join the Zorro mailing list on Billy Thomas' site. I did not know anything about e-mail then, nothing about e-mail etiquette or smily faces. It was an education. But all the talk was about Mask of Zorro When would it be released, how good would Antonio Banderas be, how could Anthony have been chosen for the role of Don Diego de la Vega, how could Diego have spent 20 years in prison!!? A week came that Disney pre-empted Zorro for some Special. Someone complained that they missed their Zorro! Zoe wrote: "I would really like to have a day of Zorro. I have hopelessly fallen for Guy. LET'S HAVE A DAY OF ZORRO. WHAT DO YOU THINK, ZORRO COOLLIST? E-MAIL. ZOEY' I wrote back, "Dear Zorro Club: I know there are a lot of people out there who are devoted to either Guy Williams or Duncan Regehr. None of the other Zorro's have as big a following. I never really saw Duncan, but every time I see Guy, I fall head over heels in love again. I would just like to know how many other Guy fanatics there are out there besides me. It just won't stop. I have to see the Walt Disney episodes over and over again. One Zorro day is not enough. Let Disney put on the Anthology series again. We who love Guy started e-mailing each other. Lynn (Cat in the Hat) took the ball from there and thus the GWOL was born. Now besides the Zorro Onelist and the WDZorro list, we have the GWOL, the GWList, and the GWFriendslist, the Guy Star News, etc. Shortly after our inception last July, we started the Get the Guy a Star campaign in cooperation with Taffy and her WDZorro group. My family thought I was seriously obsessed until they saw how much company I have. Now I spend every day reading tons of e-mail. I have friends all over this great big wonderful country. My friends are sketching portraits of Guy or sending out gift packages of memorabilia or writing excellent fan fiction. We trade tapes. We visit each others homes. Jackie sends me pictures she has captured with her video capture card to fix up and put on proof sheets. I have a list of about 50 people who receive picturees and Renard Proof Sheets from me. Keliana makes Zorro T-shirts for herself and her son Matt to wear. My Zorro fixation kept me going all the months I had to stay home to care for my father. When he passed away, my Zorro friends consoled me. The best people in the world are Zorro fans. But then, consider who our idol is. |
