Mosta

Mosta is based in the centre of Malta and is famous for having one of the largest unsupported church domes in the world, with a diameter of 40m. The Church of St Marija Assunta is Maltas largest church, capable of holding a congregation of 12,000. The Maltese architect Giorgio Grognet de Vass based its design on the Pantheon in Rome. It is said a true miracle occurred in this church during World War II when an Italian bomb smashed through the cupula during a service, grazed the interior wall and rolled across the floor and did not explode. Nobody was injured and the bomb is now kept in the vestry as a memento of the Mosta Miracle.
