Joe's Page for Kaiser Wilhelm II
His Imperial and Royal Majesty, Wilhelm II, by the Grace of God, King of All Prussia,
Grand Duke of Hohenzollern, Elector of Brandenburg and German Emperor
Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, is a monarch whom I think history has been quite unfair to. He was a man who certainly had a great many faults and flaws, but was ultimately, I believe, a good man and a decent man who was simply placed in an almost impossible position for one with his background and personality. Far from being the traditional Prussian "warrior-king", Wilhelm was born with a disability that likely gave him an inferiority complex, forcing him to be all the more bombastic in order to convince both his own people as well as himself that he could be the warrior everyone expected the King of Prussia to be.
Wilhelm, or William as his mother always called him, was also half English and admired and envied the British Empire all of his life. Yet, because of this, he was often ridiculed by his own very nationalistic people for being "too English" while at the same time being ridiculed by the British people for being "too German" and trying to compete on the international scene with Great Britain in the areas of commerce and naval supremacy.
As with many unfortunate figures of history, few people saw the "real" Wilhelm II until after he had gone into exile, though the traumas of the Great War did change certain important aspects of his personality and certain opinions he held before the war. To some degree, more recent biographies have been far enough removed to be fair, however, there still remains a great deal of prejudice shown when dealing with the last King of Prussia, which is unfortunate not only for his own legacy but also for the cause of German monarchists who have not forgotten him.
