Sarah Jane married Henry Barter Sr [16]. Born abt 1667 in Kittery, York County, Maine. Henry died in 1747; he was 80.
Barter is an uncommon English surname. There was a William Barter in Kennebunkport in 1755. His father was a Welchman who came to America in the same vessel with William Pepperell, father of Sir William, about 1675 (History of Kennebunkport, P 225). His relation, if any, to Henry is unknown. There was a John Barter of Kittery who married Deborah Keene, of Kittery, intentions October 18, 1720, married December 15, 1720 (VR's, P 90).
He may have been a relative. Henry subscribed to the covenant at the Lower Parish Church in Kittery (Kittery Point) in 1714 (NEHGR 151[1997]:41).
Henry was a deacon at the church [NEHGR 151[1997]:43). He was chosen a messenger to go with the Pastor to Wells (ibid) October 4, 1724.
Henry was a selectman in 1709. In 1711 he was on a grand jury and a deacon in 1720. He lived at the east end of Crocket's Neck (Old Kittery, P 283).
On March 23, 1730/1, the Kittery Proprietors voted him 28s (Kittery Proprietors Records, 1713-1782, P 8). There was a Henry Barter, with wife Jone, who had children Charitie, baptized October 23, 1640, and Elizabeth, baptized August 19, 1643, in Newton Ferrers, Devon, England. William Pepperell, father of Sir William, lived in Yealmpton, Devon, England. Yealmpton Parish abuts Newton Ferrers.
Sir William left a legacy in his will to the poor of Revelstoke, and to his cousin, Dorothy Lapthorn. Since the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire says that Henry was Welsh and came over in the same ship with the first Pepperell.
A John Barter was was taxed in Portsmouth in 1672. A John Barter in poor house in Portsmouth between 1781 and 1785, age 79 (thus born about 1702).
Peter Barter, Margaret, likely his wife, recently from Plymouth, England. He was going to England in 1670.
A Henry Barter was baptized January 10, 1669, St. Sepulchre, London, England, son of John and Mary Barter. Perhaps the John in Portsmouth in 1672 was the father of Henry Barter, Sr. His will was dated October 19, 1746, and proved May 1747. It names all seven children and wife Jean (Maine Wills, P 543).

iv. Mary [10]. Born ? . Mary died ? .
Mary married Francis Smart [10]. Born ? . Francis died ? .

Fourth Generation
4. Richard Crockett (Ephraim 3, Thomas 2, Thomas 1). Born ? . Richard died on 7 Jan 1757 in Stratham, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. [17]
Richard, son of Ephraim Crockett, married Deborah, daughter of Andrew Haley. He lived in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1714, and in Stratham in 1719. York deeds record that Richard Crockett, of Kittery, in the county of York, yeoman, sold to Mr. John Fernald, of the same place, yeoman, land lying in the township of Kittery, between the long Reach and Spruce Creek, containing forty acres of land that was granted unto his father, Ephraim Crockett, by the town of Kittery, July 28, 1679, etc., etc. "And furthermore, I the said Richard Crockett Do for my Self and my heirs covenant to and with the said John Fernald . . . that I am the true and proper owner thereof and have within myself full power and Lawful authority to sell," etc., etc. Signed October 14, 1708. [18]
NOTE: They apparently lived in at least Stratham, Strafford, Exeter and Epping, NH, and in Kittery, Gorham and Cape Elizabeth, ME. [17]
Richard Crockett personally appeared and made oath that he saw Nicholas Tucker to sign, seal, etc., "Kittery ye County of York," May 13, 1712. No record has been found of his children, except Samuel, mentioned below. [State of ME, p 1809] Richard Crockett signed the petition. This may be this Richard or it may be Richard son of Joshua as they both were apparently in New Hampshire around this time.
Bef 1708 Richard married Deborah Haley, daughter of Andrew Haley (? -1697) & Deborah Wilson (? -? ). [18] Born abt 1676. Deborah died ? .
Admitted to church 10 Apr 1713.
They had the following children:
i. Ephraim. Born in May 1708 in Vinalhaven, York County, Maine. [17] Ephraim died in Stratham, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, on 7 May 1785; he was 77. [19], [20]
There is no complete listing of children of Ephraim and Rebecca. N.E.H.G.R., Volume 1878, p 49-50, and Volume 1893, p 478 show deaths of children of Ephraim Crockett of Stratham, NH. Child died 16 Oct 1744, child died 28 Oct 1744, son Jonathan died 1746, child died 30 Mar 1751. [21]
On 13 Mar 1729 when Ephraim was 20, he married Rebecca Frink [22], daughter of George Frink (? -? ) & Rebecca Skillings (? -? ). [22] Born on 4 Aug 1709. Rebecca died on 5 Dec 1775; she was 66.
NOTE: She was of Kittery, Maine.
5 ii. Richard (~1710-~1781)
iii. Samuel Haley. Born in Feb 1717 in New Hampshire. [23], [24] Samuel Haley died in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine, on 19 Dec 1798; he was 81. [23], [25] Buried in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine. [26] Samuel and Mary are buried in the Gorham Village Cemetery.
NOTE: Samuel, son of Richard Crockett, was the first of the name in Gorham. There were other Crockett families there, but not related. In old deeds the name is spelled Crockit. Samuel Crockett was born in February, 1717, and died December 19, 1798. He came from New Hampshire, and settled in Falmouth (now Portland), where he lived on the northeast corner of Middle and Plum streets. He was a shipwright.
He exchanged a grant of land in Gorham for land on the foreside of Portland. He was of Falmouth in 1754, and of Gorham in 1755. In Gorham he built and occupied a two-story house on Main street, which he sold to Rev. Caleb Jewett, lately occupied by Henry Broad. He married, in 1738 (pub. March10), Sarah, born March, 1717, daughter of Jonathan Cobb; she was his first wife, and the record of their children is imperfect; 1. Sarah, baptized 1740. 2. Betty, baptized 1741; married Johathan Fickett, of Buxton, December 21, 1763. 3. Susanna, born about 1743; married Moses Whitney, December 27, 1760.
Samuel Crockett married (second), 1750, Mrs. Priscilla (Swett) Jackman, daughter of John Swett, of Falmouth. Children: 1. Samuel; 2. The mother of these children died March 7, 1763, and Samuel Crockett married (third), June 10, 1763, Mrs. Mary Whitney, widow of Abel Whitney. She died about 1794. They lived the latter part of their lives at West Gorhamn, with the son Samuel. The lot on which they latter settled, and the seventy acre lot on which Isaac and Mary Whitney lived, were located and run out by Mr. Crockett.
On 10 Mar 1738 when Samuel Haley was 21, he first married Sarah Cobb, daughter of Jonathan Cobb (? -? ), in Falmouth, New Hampshire. [23] Born on 18 Mar 1717. [26] Sarah died bef 1750; she was 32. [26]
On 8 Dec 1750 when Samuel Haley was 33, he second married Priscilla Swett, daughter of John Swett (? -? ) & Martha Noyes (? -? ). [23], [27] Born on 25 Aug 1729 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. [26] Priscilla died on 7 Mar 1763; she was 33. [27], [26]
