Critique: Grease Is the Word What’s got groove? What’s got meaning? What is the word? The word is Grease, the 1950s rock-and-roll musical that will be performed by Rush County Players this weekend at Rushville Consolidated High School’s Laughlin Center for the Performing Arts. Grease is the popular stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Although the show is well-known by most, this is the stage version, and there are some differences from the movie version. The musical is based around some of the subcultures of 1950s high school America, including the "tough guy" working-class greasers from which the musical takes its name. The musical takes place at fictional Rydell High. It's 1959, and Rydell is filled with rebellious, thrill-loving students. In the midst of this scene, Sandy Dumbrowski enters as the new girl on the first day of school. It turns out that she and the leader of the T-Birds, Danny Zuko, have had a brief fling over the summer. While Sandy stresses to her new classmates the emotional attachment that she and Danny had, Danny struggles with revealing his true feelings for her in front of his “cool” friends. As the show proceeds, the students at Rydell High have to deal with typical issues of teenage angst. Although many venues perform this show, there are certain elements that make it stand out. Director Jack Harmon has added many high-energy, well-choreographed dance numbers throughout the entire show. Choreographers Lisa Boaz and Kristina Love have worked with this talented cast and the result will keep you tapping your toes and swaying to the beat the entire night! Leading the cast are Brandon Wagoner as Danny Zuko Amy and Loehmer as Sandy Dumbrowski. Both are at their best when they are singing and able to show off their strong voices, and fit well together on stage as a couple. The cast has much more talent than just those two, however. Other outstanding vocalists include Mike Alexander as the Teen Angel singing the familiar “Beauty School Dropout,” RCP newcomer Matt Amos as Roger, Rhonda Barton as Jan, Heather Aldridge as ChaCha, Brigitt Nasby as Rizzo, Janet Foster as Marty, Matt Griffin as Johnny Casino, Trae Martindale as Doody, Kyle Huntsman as Kenickie, and Ryan Cameron as Sonny. No cast is complete without strong supporting actors, as well. They include Bonnie Locchetta as Frenchy, Molly Rose as Patty, Lora Norris as Miss Lynch, and Steve Harmon as Vince Fontaine. The rest of the ensemble includes Jonathon Norris, Holly Norris, Linda McMinn, Danie Scott, Amanda Paul, Nicole Wooldridge, Nikki Kirchoff and Jeff Wagoner. In all, they sing and dance to 15 strong vocal numbers. Other key players in any production are the production staff, tech staff, and musical staff. Producer Shelli Griffin, Tech Director Mark Love and Musical Director Marvin Rees have assembled a great group of talented people to polish this production. The orchestra is a 5-piece jazz combo that is also featured on-stage during the prom scene. The costuming comes to life, led by coordinator Jennifer Berkemeier, and the set is outstanding. The director’s set designs have been brought to life by local artisan Tamara Adwell and a set piece from a previous show is used that was done by Tracy Flynn. They worked to this production’s advantage. Watch for the some unique effects and set pieces on stage as well! Grease will be presented Thursday through Sunday. Thursday and Friday evening performances begin at 8 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. Tickets for students in kindergarten through 12th-grade are $5 each; tickets for adults are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets are available at the Rush County Chamber of Commerce or can be reserved by calling Rush County Players at 765-938-1711 or online at www.rushcountyplayers.org. Part of the proceeds of this show will be donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. If you’re up for an evening of laughter and the energy of an era gone by, don’t miss the Rush County Players and their production of this rock-and-roll extravaganza! You will be singing as you leave the theater! |
