Michael J. Fox was born on 9th June 1961 in Canada - where he grew up till he dropped out of school. For Mike - he didn't intend on becoming an actor - If you took a time machine and went back to 1975 a 14-year old Michael J. Fox would have said something like, "Me a famous actor? get out of town!"
Growing up Mike always enjoyed Ice-hockey, writing, drawing and played guitar forming bands with new friends at mixed ages. Soon after Mike started getting into acting before he reached High School (which in Canada really starts when you are 15/16 years old) and managed to get into small local Canadian television shows in 1976. Mike compaired to other people his age was under the average height and he didn't like being small. In lucky man he quoted when he was younger his little sister who was 3 years younger than him was taller than him by the time he was 6. (Trust me i've grown up small too and i know how it feels seing people like 5 years younger than you - and they are two feet taller)
By the time Michael was 16 he was landing a lot of acting jobs (not big hollywood jobs yet) and a few months before he turned 18 and was ready to graduate - he dropped out of school - something he regretted earlier like all people do if they leave school too early... and moved to a small apartment down in California
Soon after though mike found himself in a little debt as he spent his money as quickly as earned and put on weight through eating macaroni and cheese - as he also quotes in Lucky man - Mike then decided to not spend his money in ways like this again and lost the weight he gainned.
In 1979 aged 18 he landed a role in a disney film called "midnight maddness" The second rated PG disney film - the film was released in 1980 and is currently only avaliable in USA and Canada - It is rare to have in the UK.
In midnight madness mike plays a 15-year-old brother of the main focused character - because of his height and partially young looks mike managed to suprise audiances when they found out he was 18.
Director/producer Gary David Goldberg (a great director in my opinion - but notas great as speilberg) wanted Matthew Broderick to star as Alex P. Keaton in his new family sitcom, "Family ties." in 1982 - but mike auditioned and Gary changed his mind - Michael got the part and this was the start of his success.
Mike managed to also do a movie in 1983 with Anthony ("ER") Edwards and Chrispin ("Thin Man/George McFly") Glover called High School USA. Originally set as a TV movie but is now avaliable in DVD at a low price in E-Bay. It wasn't such a great success but more was to come
During the filming of Teen Wolf in 1984 Mike met a frew people who were also shooting near their area for the new Back To The Future steven spielberg film - Mike knew Chrispin Glover was going to be in this film - and Eric Stoltz was cast as the main character - mike said he'd love to do a movie like that in the future.
ON location in London filming Family Ties however... Gary had a confession - he gave Mike the script from Back to the Future saying he was first choice for the lead - but now that Eric stoltz was taken out of the filming Mike was allowed to accept the offer if he wanted - and he did. But because of one of the cast members being written out of "Family ties." for a while after having a baby - mike couldn't in anyway take time off to be written around - so at night he'd shoot the BTTF movie and in the day shoot "Family ties." in frint of a live audiance. On average getting only 1-2 hours sleep a day - but mike didn't care. He loved his job and that's what was importaint.
Mike by the time "Teen Wolf" and "Back to the Future." came out was now getting famous by the second - he owned 5 cars including a Jeep Cherokee, Ferrari and Nissan 300XL (guessing last two letters) and a pit bull Terrier named "Burnaby" Obviously named after the place he lived in Canada as an early teen - and he owned a large house in California - as long as Mike had the back-up of his series, "Family Ties." he would always have that to fall back on - so he accepted more movie offers up to 1988 - Secret of my success - Light of day - Bright lights, big city - most were not big successes but Mike continued to rise. In 1985 during filming of some family ties episodes he met Tracy Pollan - who later became his wife in 1988 - Tracy also starred with mike in Bright Lights, Big City after he year of playing Alex P. keaton's girlfriend Ellen Reed.
Mike won an emmy award for his acting in episode "A, My name is Alex." in Family Ties - and more awards soon followed through his career.
In 1989 mike started filming the back to the future sequels - starred in a R-rated war movie with seann penn called, "Casulties of war."- and Tracy gave birth to his son, "Sam Fox." - Mike also finished with "Family ties" so now he had nothing to back him up incase of a failure with success at another movie. in 1990 Back to the future part 3 came out in cinemas and part 2 was on it's way to video.
Michael's father passed away in 1990... and it was in 1990 that he began filming "The Hard Way" film with James Woods. After filming the film - he accepted to film "Doc Hollywood" and after shooting scenes he and co-star/friend woody harrleson would head on down to the local pub to have a drink
Then one morning Mike woke up to find his left pinky was moving all by its self. He tried for a whole year to find out what was wrong with it - wondering if accidentally hanging himself during a stunt scene for BTTF part 3 had anything to do with it - and soon after his whole hand was affected.
In 1991 he found out he had Young-onset parkinson's disease and decided only close family and friends should know and it's to be kept secret from the public till the right time.
Mike still landed roles but lighter ones - in 1993 he moved his family to New York landing roles such as "chance" from Homeward bound - and doing basically what he calls a "Re-make of secret of my success" in his next film, "With love or money." then he made another disney film that year called, "Life with Mikey."
In 1995 Tracy gave birth to two twins and the family called them "Aquinnah" and "Schuyler." In 1996 he did a small part in the film "Mars attacks" by Tim Burton - his character gets zapped by an alien 40 mins into the movie.
Whilst filming "The frightners" in new zealand with Trini Alvarado, mike decided he wanted to go back to television as he missed it - and Gary David Goldberg was teaming up with Bill Lawrence (Creator of scrubs - 2001)on a new sitcom at the time called "Spin City" so up until 2000 this is where he was - on spin city every week.
However in 1998 his condition was worsening and he let in the cast members of "Spin City" know about his condition - and had brain surgery to try and help out his Left-side which was worsening. Somehow a reporter found out about this - and tried asking mike about his health - he refused and as he got into his car and almost drove off the woman called out, "Parkinson's Disease." and mike decided this was a good time to let everyone know his secret.
In 2000 he retired from acting and set up the Michael J. Fox foundation - and is trying to find a cure for parkinson's - last year in 2004 he campaigned with John Kerry - and has even spoken to governors just 2 months ago on allowing stem cell research - as he belives there is a cure in it. Michael last appeared in two episodes of scrubs in 2004 - he still acts but he's taking it easy and woking more with his foundation - Mike's foundation has earned over 5 million dollars worldwide since opening in 2000.
The happy endings? In 1999 Michael made his signature and hand-prints on the ground in Orlando Studios Florida
In 2001 - tracy Pollan gave birth to the family's 4th Child a girl they named "Esme Fox."
In 2002 Michael J. Fox recieved his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 2004 Michael J. Fox went campainging with John Kerry in hope that John Kerry got elected new president.
In 2005 Michael J. Fox went to governors to try and make Stem Cell Research legal again - beliveing Stem Cell research will thus lead to a cure for Parkinson's Disease and many more Brain illnesses like Alzhiemers.
Today Michael leads a great life - and thus still remains a legend in television and movies. Think his next movie is going to be great? You'll have to wait and see in the future!
