DENVER – The family of Kiza Yussufu fled santa fe public school district nm the troubles of the Democratic Republic of Congo to find something better in Colorado. Now, Kiza is prepared eleanor blessard sacrement school cambridge mass to do whatever it takes to get an education at a new charter school.
"I really do want to go to this school," said Yussufu, a freshman at the Denver Venture School. "And, I really want to fight for it."
The Denver Venture School is a program designed taylor county georgia school to teach students the skills of entrepreneurship. Head of School Ami Desai says she targeted a group of African refugee families who were excited about teaching kids how to run a business. They make up about 10 percent of the student body population.
"Teaching the kids concepts like financial literacy, entrepreneurship, workforce readiness," said Desai. "Feeling like entrepreneurship is their way out of their cycle of poverty."
The school is located in a former elementary building just north of downtown colorado guide school Denver. Being a program of choice, Desai says about two-thirds of all iowa high school state wrestling her students will have to take public transportation to get to the Denver Venture School.
"One of the challenges they face is they'll be getting on public transportation san bernardino school district for the very first time," said Desai.
Yussufu and two other freshmen wait near their homes to meet with Desai who is showing them how to take the RTD bus to school two weeks before classes begin. Hana Tachbele and Woyonoshet Kirkos both left Ethiopia in search of a better life.
"It was hard for us to figure out how to get to school," said Kirkos. "I'd be really nervous because I'd be so scared that I'd get lost and go some other place that I don't know."
That's the big concern. They all live in southeast Denver. The ride back and forth from school takes them on two different bus routes and they are roughly an hour each way for each of the 13 and 14-year-old girls.
"Downtown is big, a really, really big place and I can get lost anytime, any minute," said Yussufu.
Desai shows the girls a map of where the bus stops are located before telling them about how to get a transfer card so they can switch busses. When they board, they are almost alone. But, as the ride continues they mixed within a crowd of people going to work.
"It's a lot helpful for the principal to take her time and help us," said Tachbele.
They spend the 55 minutes looking at books and information on the history of the Regional Transportation District (RTD) of Denver provided to them by Desai.
"I think there's some challenges with the bus ride being so long that they're gonna have a long day already," said Desai. "It starts about 6:30 in the morning and it goes till about 5:30 in the evening."
Desai says riding each day with real people photography school on their way to real jobs is a lesson in itself for her students. She says their willingness to persevere will build character.
"Shows their true entrepreneurial spirit in all honesty, they're willing to take the risk," said Desai. "They're willing to come on their own."
During their trial run, the first bus was late arriving at the stop where the girls needed to board the second bus. Desai used it as a learning experience as how to figure out alternatives to taking the planned route.
"We've been talking about if the goddard school bus is late, what do we do?" said Desai. "If the weather is bad, what do we do?"
After deciding to wait 30 minutes for the next bus instead of walking, Desai and three students arrived at the school. Desai says she will be lenient with students who may late due to transportation issues.
The school will be issuing passes for students to use, so they can travel for free. The Denver Venture School is a tuition-free public charter program funded by the state. They are still looking for students to enroll. Including this first year, a new grade will be added with simi valley unified school district 120 students until four grades are carl sandburg middle school filled in 2012.
Yussufu says being a part of a new school and coco beach high school learning about business is worth the long rides on the bus each day.
"It's like I'm getting ready for my dream," said Yussufu.
