1) At this age the child can start to read series such as the Ladybird Keyword Reading Scheme series of readers. Book 5 to 7 can be attempted over a period of 4 to 6 months.
2)Try either the a and b series. Leave the c series to a later stage. The a and b series approach reading as whole language learning whereas the c series uses the phonetic approach.
The whole language approach teaches recognition of words as a pattern of letters. Combined with the keyword reading scheme where words are repeated, words are committed to the child's memory.
Some prefer to start with the phonetic approach but this need not be so.
At this stage Phonics can be introduced. TheLadybird c series can be used.
Reading Skills (Level 4)
1) Toward the end of Book 7, the child can be initiated into readng more advanced readers such as Beauty and the Beast, Robinson Crusoe, etc.
2) The idea here is to get the child now to appreciate the usage of words in the context of a story.
Key Strategy :
The key is to have a system. Stick to it for a while before giving up or switching to another approach. Keep reading with the child by keeping the momentum going.
Remember there is a learning curve. You and the child are mounting the learning curve now..
