Part 2

Note: This section was added due to the addition questions I have gotten on the name.

  The original Buddhist name of Choy Li Fut was "Fut Gar Jing Jung" (Basically; Buddhist family pure seed techniques). However, the Buddhist monks; Jee Shim, Choy Fok, Li San and Chan Yuen Wu (as well as, other priest), pased on a five (5) family name to Chan Heung and others stylist (those taught by these monks, but not of the Chan Family). This name was "Choy, Lee, Hok, Fut and Hung." Later, instead of saying the whole name, it was simply referred to as "Choy Li Fut". Then, over time the entire name was forgotten, even to this day the reason behind the first three (3) names (Choy Li Fut) became confused with other meanings. This mainly happened due to the upheaval in China from 1930 to the 1970's when several generations of Choy Li Fut Masters and stylist either left China, or were killed ending this information. The names Choy, Lee, Hok, Fut and Hung represent the following;

1. A way to honor particular families and or their styles which had been taught and intermingled with the Fut (Buddhist) Gar system for many centuries.

2. To honor particular dynasties, and rules.

3. To honor the Buddhist faith and fighting system.

    The very notion that "Choy Li Fut" was created by, and named after monks "Choy Fok" and "Li San" is completely untrue). In addition, if this was true, why wasn't Chan Wu's name included such as; Chan, Choy Li Fut, or Choy Chan, Li Fut and etc.
    Lastly, as for our branch of Choy Li Fut of which Chan Heung is the founder, please note that there are other Choy Li Fut branches that do not particularly trace there roots to Chan Heung. This is because, Chan Heung was not the only one taught by these monks. Thus, these schools are no less valid, but of just a different branch.

Note: These 5 names hold other means concerning the art not touched on here.

                                                                                              Part 3 HOK GAR

People E-mail me asking; what does Hoc Gar (AKA; He, Ke, Ho, Hak, Hok Ka), stands for. Hok Gar is better known as Hok Ka Kuen and refers to a number of royal families that fled south (first the royal Sung, then later the royal Ming families) both bring with them their family kung fu style transplanting it in the south. At present, Hok Gar mainly refers to the Hokkein people of the Guangdong area, but in our style of Choy Li Hoc Fut Hung, it refers to the royal families that help the Buddhism monks.

I lost touch with Ben right after Jimmy died, but kept searching for him. Then a short time ago I learned Ben passed away around 1992. He was one of my best friends, a great Kung Fu man and I miss him greatly. If anyone knows his wife or daughter  please let me know.
Tsai Li Fo San Soo Schools
The names (Choy and Li) in our style do not refer to the monks "Choy Fook" and "Li San" although both these monks helped in the creation of the system and are part of our lineage. However, the names in our style of Choy Li Fut (short versions of the name) refers to particular families that supported and aided the Buddhist monks over the centuries in both the development of Buddhism and the fighting arts. The first three familes in our style; "Choy", "Li ", and "Hok" were combined around the Buddha (Fut Ga) family. The monks then consolidated these families into five (5) aspects of training, and or fighting known as the five (5) Ga's. They are; Choy, Fist techniques; Li, Legs or foot strikes; Hok, Chin na and pressure point techniques; Fut, Open hand blows, Buddhist psychology, and the philosophy of the art; Hung, power techniques and dynamic tension exercise. At the end of the 5 family name is "Gaa" In addition to meaning family, it also refers to a family that specializes in an art or science.
