You
are invited to participate with hundreds of other San Diegans with disabilities
and their supporters to Disability Independence Day to be hosted in Balboa
Park on the evening of Friday, July 25th and Saturday, July 26th.
Tentative events will include a training and reception Friday evening, a parade
through the heart of the park beginning at noon on Saturday to mark the 13th
Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a
keynote speaker, and a picnic celebration with food and music following the
parade, and advocacy/community organizing activities throughout the day.
This
year’s event is tinged with concern and foreboding. While the ADA has made
America more accessible to people with disabilities, the ADA and the rights of
people with disabilities are under attack. Recent Supreme Court rulings have
narrowed the ADA and put people with disabilities at risk in the workplace,
community and at home. All across the land, businesses and State agencies have
attempted to evade complying with the law. While we have achieved some
victories in California and San Diego over the last year in defense of the ADA,
we are under serious attack and have witnessed serious failures of leadership
and betrayals by elected officials who claim to support the ADA and the rights
of Americans with Disabilities.
Come
and celebrate the most important civil rights legislation for Americans with
Disabilities, the ADA! Entertainment, food, fun, demonstrations, workshops, and
maybe even a Town Hall meeting. Family, friends and people who want to make a
difference are all invited.
Requests For Disability-Related
Accommodations
Requests
for disability-related accommodations (ASL interpreter, large print, Braille,
audiotape) should be made no later than July 20, 2003. Attendees are requested
to refrain from wearing perfumed products to assure full access for all. Thank
you.
If you
would like to purchase an ad in our program which will be distributed to more
than 300 people with disabilities on the day of the event, please contact:
Alisa Shuman at: (619)
258-6244
or email her at Redwheler@aol.com
We
will be selling full page, half page, quarter page, and business card (1/8
page) size ads. All proceeds from the
ads are used to support DID. Print
ready ads must be received by June 27, 2003 with appropriate payment to be included
in this year’s program.
You
may also secure a program advertisement by completing and returning the Table and
Program Advertisement Reservation Form (PDF File - requires Adobe Reader)
with the correct payment.
This
year we are making tables available for organizations, agencies and businesses
to share information about your membership, program or services. Please plan to have one or two people
manning the table to give out information and answer questions. If you would like to reserve a table, please
contact Betty Bacon at (619) 583-3717 or complete and return with the correct payment the Table and
Program Advertisement Reservation Form (PDF File - requires Adobe Reader).
A $25.00 fee will be charged for each table requested. Organizations may share
a table at no additional cost. If we have a large response, priority will be
given to consumer based organizations and agencies. There are a limited number
of tables, so please respond early.
