SANDY'S LOCATIONS AS OF 1968!!!!

This is the list of Sandy's drive-in locations as of 1968. Starting with row one and moving down, it appears to be in the order of which they opened. Sheridan Road Peoria was Sandy's #1. One problem is Kewanee, Illinois which is Sandy's #100 and is not listed here as #100 but as #91. Perhaps nine locations went out of business during this time or maybe they relocated and started again with another number. Special thanks to Robby Delius who provided ten of the specific addresses as well as three of the missing Sandy's locations - Smyrna, Pensacola #2 and Louisville #2!

This list appears to be from the 1968 national convention. The convention was held on 3/5/68. The list appears to be in order of opening so cedar rapids-west must have been opened by this date (3/5/68). This is a good reference point when searching microfilm for grand opening articles and advertisements.

The following list includes stores open since 1/1/72. So there is a three year gap in-between the above table and this one. Obviously, more stores were created during this time period and perhaps some closed as well. In any case, Sandy's had 240 stores at the time of the merger with Hardees. It would be interesting to know which cities this included. Some cities had multiple Sandy's. As you can see, Dayton, Ohio appears to have had at least 14 Sandy's which is amazing.

The third column "Stores to Start Construction" are most likely stores which were on the books as Sandy's but opened as Hardees due to the buyout of the Company in 1972. Grinnell, Iowa is in existence as of September 2004 as Hardees. It opened as Hardees and is on the highway just off the main Square of the City. Atlantic, Iowa opened as a Hardees as well, however, as of September 2004, the location exists as a Burger King and is on the main highway entering into the city.

Sandy's fan and Hardees employee Mr. Rex Epperheimer has provided for this site and incredible snapshot of the last moments of Sandy's! Some of the very last Sandy's on the books in 1973 actually became Sandy's for just weeks before flipping to Hardees. Absolutely incredible information here, a look at the end of one of the greatest restaurants of all time!

First of all, let me say that you have an outstanding site! For years I looked for information on Sandy's but was unable to find any. I don't know a whole lot about Sandy's, but I do have some information to share. I believe that the Herrin IL location did open as a Sandy's on Feb. 13, 1973, but was quickly converted to a Hardee's. I knew a woman that was on the original opening crew. It is still in operation as of today as a Hardee's. The West Frankfort store opened next in March, the Harrisburg opened in April of the same year. I am not sure if they opened as Sandy's or Hardee's. They are all still in operation as is Benton. The original Salem building is still standing. I believe it's a drugstore now. The original DuQuoin location is still standing and is a pool supply store. The Mt. Vernon, Marion and Murphysboro locations have all been torn down. I spent almost 24 years working for Hardee's, starting my career in the Herrin location in 1981. I worked in or knew someone who worked in all of these locations at one time or another. Thanks for the great web sight. Rex Epperheimer

225 s. cobb drive, smyrna, georgia Lee Watson writes: There were at least two Sandy's in Fort Smith, Arkansas, with one at 2720 Rogers Avenue and the other at 4123 Grand Avenue. Both are now Hardee's. (this is interesting since there is one Sandy's listed as being in existence before 1968 and one to begin construction in 1972. Could this be a Sandy's which was built between 1969 and 1971 and a third Sandy's was on its way being built in 1972?! Another possibility is that this Sandy's was built in 1972 and became a Sandy's during the time of Sandy's switching to Hardees and then became Hardees after opening as Sandy's! Lee Watson also wrote that Sandy's was at North Saint & Garland in Fayetteville, Arkansas and that...The building has been painted white, but is otherwise largely unchanged! Fayetteville, Arkansas

Special thanks to Sandy's Super-fan Chris Bryant Gerdes, who provided this special letter announcing the nineteen of the twenty (California was the other) states in which Sandy's was located. Sandy's also had a location in Canada and were beginning to expand into Europe as well!

Sandy's was not only the choice of the United States but also the choice of Europe as well! The franchisee for many Peoria, Illinois and other locations opened Sandy's locations in Belgium which served liquor on their menu!
