Influences | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
My influences include artists which deal in organic,or better stated, Biomorphic forms. There is something about these forms that appeal to some deep seated vision that is pervasive throughout my artwork from my early paintings and drawings on through to my current work in sculpture. Artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Alexander Clader and others laid the ground work for artists such as myself. Today, artists such as John Grade and even furniture maker Mark Levin continue to create forms based on Biomorphism. There is an ecclesiastical thought that everything has been done already. There is no original thought. In the arts, this is relavent to movements and creating ground breaking bodies of work. Thanks to these artists, yes, the work has come before contemporary artists, but there is still room for work to be created within the realm of personal bent. At this point in my life, my works of pure form are entrenched in this movement. Even my narrative sculpture is deeply influenced by those that came before me. I owe these people a debt of gratitude. Thank you. |

I felt the most intense pleasure in piercing the stone in order to make an abstract form and space; quite a different sensation from that of doing it for the purpose of realism. Barbara Hepworth |

Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation. Jean Arp |

The secret of life is to have a task, something you devote your entire life to, something you bring everything to, every minute of the day for the rest of your life. And the most important thing is, it must be something you cannot possibly do. Henry Moore |

I attempt to infuse my work with a ÒBeethoven dynamicÓ which is the ability to weave melodic filigree out of molten steel and tempering it with power and passion. The origin for my furniture and sculpture is the delineation of the silhouette. I visualize the piece in a black, monolithic material rather than wood. If the form has visual impact in this black dress it will be that much more potent when endowed in wood or cast bronze. Continued at Mark Levin website. |

...Judd challenged traditional European ideas about art-making. He coined the term specific objects to refer to structures that were neither painting nor sculpture, but somewhere in between. This work reflects his desire to create self-sufficient objects, eliminating any factor that might interfere with the physical qualities of its materials. As he wrote, A shape, a volume, a colour, a surface is something in itself. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
