Herbert Schulz
the blitz kids
Schulz meet rock entrepreneur Steve Strange, an exponent of the New Romantic movement, at London's-former Blitz Club in 1980, where Strange was then employed as a bouncer wh approved guests admission according to their mode of dress.  Strange, at the time a very young unknow recntly arrived from Wales,  had not responded for months to Schulz's previous requests to photography him to Stern magazine.  Finally,  Schulz sent a messenger with advance payment to Strange and he agreed to be photographed and interviewed. The only stipulation was that make-up artist Richard Sahrra would make-up Strange and his friend Theresa  any way they wished.
"I photographed them as documentary " Schulz says, "i used a white background imagining that each picture would be used someday in the Museum of Modern ARt ( in New York ) - this fashion is history  already.  Fifteen year from now, no one will belive tht people actually looked like this "
Three years after the start of the New Romantic wave, Steve Strange, still in his early 20s,  is now a millionaire, owner of the Camden Town, London, and lead singer of a rock group called Visage. Theresa,  who dressed as a new romantic even when holding down her former nine-t-five job as a secretary at London daily paper,  is now in Hollywood, hoping to fulfull her dream of playing the role of Bette Grable in a film.  For this photography, as well as the rest of the work shown here.
