May 23, 1953, Cape Town, South Africa - In November 1958, the South African Air Force released a brief announcement concerning radar-tracking of six successive passes of one or more unknown high-speed objects over the Cape. On January 1, 1967, in a transoceanic shortwave broadcast from South Africa, the authenticity of this report was confirmed, though no additional data beyond what had been cited earlier were presented. In the six passes, the target's altitude varied between 5,000 and 15,000 ft, and its closest approach varied between 7 and 10 miles. Speeds were estimated at over 1200 mph, well beyond those of any aircraft operating in that area at that time.
Discussion. -- This report, on which the available information is slim, is cited to indicate that not only visual sightings but also radar sightings of seemingly unconventional objects appear to comprise a global phenomenon. By and large, foreign radar sightings are not readily accessible, and not easily cross-checked. Zigel (Ref. 88) briefly mentions a Russian incident in which both airborne and ground-based radar tracked an unidentified in the vicinity of Odessa, on April 4, 1966, the ground-based height-finding radar indicating altitudes of well over 100,000 ft. Such reports, without accessory information, are not readily evaluated, of course.

Sunday evening, November 12, 1972, found Harold Truter, the principal of Rosmead Junior School, driving home after a weekend holiday. As he drove into Rosmead, a small town in South Africa located about 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Port Elizabeth, he spotted an unusual light in the sky. Through the car's windscreen Truter could see the school building up ahead, with its attached bungalow living quarters, and to the left a tennis court with a high chainlink fence and a grove of eight bluegum trees. A strange bright greenish-white flickering glow hovered above the tennis court. "What the bloody hell" the principal thought. Turning off the highway, he drove down a short road and pulled into the driveway. As he emerged from the car, he espied "a strange light in the sky but considered it to be a natural but unusual phenomenon." The "distant light" was now a good 183 meters (600 feet) away, hovering over a peaked ridgeline that towered over a nearby construction site. Numerous dark silent trucks crouched at the foot of the hill. Truter frowned thoughtfully. Must be a helicopter... But there was no engine noise, just the whisper of wind through the leaves of the bluegum trees. Returning to the car, Truter unlocked the boot and began taking the luggage out. But as he carried two suitcases past the tennis court, the principal's nose detected the scent of burned oil. Peering through the chainlink fence, Truter "saw that the surface of the tennis court had been broken up and tar (asphalt) and coal ash had been lifted up and scattered." Truter tugged at the tennis court gate. It was locked. He ten tried the door on the bungalow. That, too, was securely locked. He vividly remembered locking it himself late Friday afternoon. He glanced back at the tennis court. Asphalt chunks littered the surface. Gaping holes about five inches (12.5 centimeters) deep had been torn in a lateral direction parallel to the white lines. He saw a pool of molten tar glistening in the dim light. After unlocking the door, he went inside and rang the police. "Investigation of the tennis court indicated a symmetrical pattern of identical holes; some of the tar from the court had been strewn 183 meters (600 feet) away, on to a ridge nearby." "Bluegum trees alongside the tennis court had been badly burnt and they died about two months later," in January 1973. Interestingly, the Rosmead police told Truter "that there were many other UFO reports received from the same area at the same time, including reports of sightings by (South African) police officers." "Analysis of samples taken from the site indicated no obvious anomalies, though (they) indicated no solution, either." "Whether or not the tennis court was the landing site of a UFO remains speculated by some; but unproven."

July 31, 1975 - at a place called Loxton, a gentleman called Danie Van Graan saw a "trailer" in his sheep enclosure. Thinking he could share a beverage with the four small occupants (thirty nine inches tall), he advanced on the strange vehicle. When only ten feet away he was hit by a light beam. Immobilized, he saw the craft depart. A short time later he died, riddled with cancer. When investigator Cynthia Hind spoke to the doctor and suggested the UFO's beam was the cause of his death, he replied that unless she could produce a document that stated he was free of cancer prior to this event , then he (the doctor) was not prepared to believe that was the cause. Fair enough.
In 1987, a mother of two sons 10 and 11, living in the Johannesberg area, began to experience a series of unwelcome and unpleasant bedroom intrusions. She claimed to have been frequently raped, although unable to see her assailant. Also, a state of paralysis existed during these assaults. Later on, after a clicking sound, there was a monk-like figure beside her bed. He blew into her ear and her whole body trembled inside. "On one occasion they examined my face.
They opened my jaw so wide it affected my jaw bone near to my ear. I now have a click in my jaw and have had medical attention for this, although I did not tell the doctor how it occurred. One morning, as I came out of the shower, I stood naked in front of the mirror and felt something like a bird fluttering in my breast. I could visibly see the fluttering in the mirror. Shortly after that, I had a lumpectomy. After the operation I was told it was neither benign nor malignant, and it puzzled my surgeon as he had never seen anything like that before.
On Saturday, April 22, 2000, at 7:45 p.m., Alan J. and his wife were standing outside their home in George, Southern Cape province, South Africa when they spotted a bright object approaching from the west. "I thought I was looking at a Satellite, but it was very bright," Alan reported. "Much brighter than any night star or Satellite. It went dim as my wife and I were watching it, and it travelled at about the same speed as a Satellite," moving from west to east. "We studied it for about 15 seconds total." Alan, who was facing northwest when he saw the UFO, added that "It was brighter than any night star and was travelling in a straight line." George is in Southern Cape province approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Capetown.
